Knitting a headband with a twist – free pattern inspiration

Last winter I moved to a place next to the beach. This is actually a great fact, but it was definitely colder than I was used to. I needed a headband to keep my head warm, so I decided to look for some inspiration on Pinterest. I actually was inspired by the headband you can see on the picture below. It’s from a cheesy Dutch movie ‘All you need is love’ which I watched that same winter. The headband looks great!

But when I looked on Pinterest, I found some other patterns I wanted to try. Eventually I made a mix of things I thought looked nice and you can see the result below. I will give a description on how to make it below. Like I said, I got inspired and the headband isn’t my pattern, but this combined version is mine.

This is the headband worn at the beach.

Materials

• yarn with wool (I used ‘Julia’ from Zeeman, you can purchase a different color here)
• knitting needle, 7.0 mm
• scissors
• needle

Pattern

round 1 Cast on 18 stitches
round 2 Slip the first stitch, knit the next stitch with a straight stitch, knit the next two stitches with a purl stitch. *The next two with a straight stitch, next two with a purl stitch*. * * Repeat until you reach the end of the round. The last two stitches are a straight stitch.
round 3 Slip the first stitch, knit the next stitch with a purl stitch. 2 straight stitches, *2 purl stitches, 2 straight stitches*. * * Repeat until you the reach the end of the round. The last two stitches are a purl stitch.

Repeat round 2 and 3 until the headband fits your head. It gets a bit stretchy so don’t make it too loose.
Fasten off in the last row and leave a tail. You can use the tail to sew the twist on the front. But how to make the twist? At first I wanted to knit the twist with two loose parts and knit them together at the end. Eventually I found this option which was way easier. It’s a YouTube video and at 7.39 minutes you can see how you easily make the twist.

After a year I’m still very happy with my headband. But I also would like to have a grey one, like the one in the first picture. Maybe this winter?

Afgelopen winter ben ik verhuisd naar een plaats gelegen aan het strand. Dat is een hele goede beslissing geweest in vele opzichten, maar het is hier wel wat kouder dan ik gewend was. Ik vond dus dat ik maar een leuke winterse haarband moest maken en dus zocht ik onder andere wat inspiratie op Pinterest. In eerste instantie was ik geïnspireerd door de foto die je hierboven kan zien. Het is een shot van de Nederlandse film ‘All you need is love’ die ik afgelopen winter keek. Ik vind deze haarband echt heel erg leuk!

Maar toen ik op Pinterest keek, zag ik ook hele andere leuke patronen die ik wel wilde proberen. Uiteindelijk heb ik een soort mix gemaakt van verschillende dingen en in deze post kan je het resultaat zien. Hieronder geef ik een beschrijving van hoe ik die van mij heb gemaakt. Zoals ik al zei, het is dus niet echt mijn patroon, maar dit is de versie die ik ervan gemaakt heb.

Materialen

• bolletje wol (ik gebruikte ‘Julia’ van Zeeman, deze kan je nog in een andere kleur hier kopen)
• breinaald, 7.0 mm
• schaar
• naald

Patroon

toer 1 Zet 18 steken op.
toer 2 Brei de eerste steek niet, maar laat deze afglijden. Brei de volgende steek met een rechte steek, brei de volgende twee steken averecht. *De volgende twee steken recht, de volgende twee steken averecht*. * * Herhaal tot het einde van de rij. De laatste twee steken waren, als het goed is, recht.
toer 3 Brei de eerste steek niet, maar laat deze afglijden. Brei de volgende steek averecht, de twee steken daarna recht. * De volgende twee steken averecht, de volgende twee steken recht*. * * Herhaal tot het einde van de rij. De laatste twee steken waren, als het goed is, averecht.

Herhaal toer 2 en 3 tot de haarband om je hoofd past. Het rekt nog best een beetje mee, dus maak hem niet te los.
Hecht af in de laatste rij die je maakt en laat een lange draad hangen. Hiermee kan je straks de draai vastnaaien die op de voorkant zit.
Hoe maak je deze draai? Eerst wilde ik twee losse delen breien en die vervolgens aan elkaar breien, maar dit leek me zo ingewikkeld nog. Gelukkig vond ik deze optie, die veel makkelijker is. Het is een YouTube video en bij 7.39 minuten laat ze zien hoe je deze draai gemakkelijk zelf kan maken.

Na een jaar ben ik nog steeds ontzettend blij met mijn haarband. Maar die grijze vind ik ook nog steeds erg leuk, dus misschien dat ik die deze winter eens kan proberen na te maken.

Reindeer Christmas hanger – Crocheting pattern review

It’s almost Christmas! Well, maybe it takes a few weeks more, but it’s never too early to start making your Christmas decoration already:) We got the honor to review this new crocheting pattern of a reindeer from Haked (Instagram, Facebook). You can buy the pattern for a low price here (pay attention, DUTCH only!).

The pattern is well organized, with a clear list of what you need in materials, which stitches are used, commonly used terms and the different pieces that you need to make are explained step-by-step.

I did however find some minor things that I think were not entirely clear. For example, in the pattern description about the body in the last row (row 45) it wasn’t written to make a slip stitch and to fasten off. At the same time, in the pattern for the forehead in row 16 it is actually written to fasten off, but in my opinion this is not necessary, because row 17 tells you to make single crochets all around the piece. By not doing it, you will need to make a few knots less;) Further, and I think this is the most important thing that I would change, is the pattern for the antlers. It tells you to make 4x the same piece (so one pattern is described). In this way however, you will have two exact the same antlers, but as you can see in the picture, the antlers need to be placed mirrored. This means that one of the two antlers will show ‘the wrong side’ of the crocheted work. Therefore it would have been better if there were two patterns written, one for the left antler and one for the right antler. Also, in row 4 and row 6 it wasn’t clear if you had to make the single crochet in the same crochet (I did do this though).

Besides the few imperfections in the pattern I think the design is actually really great. It’s relatively fast to make and everything is build up with front and back pieces (so all the pieces you make are flat). I decided to make a Christmas hanger out of it, by placing a glitter ribbon between the front and back pieces before sewing them together. He is about 20cm large when you make it on needle 2.5mm. I used 12mm black safety eyes. Of course you could also just use it as a stuffed Toy instead of a hanger. You can easily place a rattle inside while stuffing.

Why would you buy the crocheting pattern for a reindeer from Haked? Pattern available here (DUTCH).

Pros

• Completely made with flat pieces, crocheted in rows (not in spiral)
• Good design, pieces fit perfectly
• Entirely made with two stitches only, so beginner proof.
• Multi-purpose as hanger or stuffed toy
• Listed materials and used terms very accurate
• Low price
• Easy to reach the author for your questions

Cons

• There are still some imperfections in the pattern itself that might be resolved soon
• Relatively a lot of dreads to fasten off

In conclusion, I think the pattern is worth the price and it’s perfect to make a cute hanger within a couple of hours. I gave mine away to a friend and soon it will hang in her Christmas tree!

NEDERLANDS

Het is bijna kerst! Nou ja, het duurt misschien nog een aantal weken, maar het is nooit te vroeg om alvast je kerst decoratie te maken;) We hadden de eer om dit nieuwe haakpatroon voor een hertje te reviewen van Haked (Instagram, Facebook). Je kunt het patroon hier voor een klein prijsje kopen (Nederlands).

Het patroon is goed georganiseerd met een duidelijk lijstje van de materialen die je nodig hebt, welke steken er worden gebruikt, veel gebruikte termen en de verschillende onderdelen zijn stap-voor-stap uitgelegd.

Ik ben daarentegen wel wat kleine dingetjes tegengekomen waarvan ik denk dat deze niet helemaal duidelijk zijn opgeschreven. Er staat bijvoorbeeld in de beschrijving voor het lijf in de laatste rij (rij 45) niet beschreven dat je een hv moet maken en dan moet afhechten. Tegelijkertijd staat in het patroon voor het voorhoofd in rij 16 dat je moet afhechten, maar naar mijn mening is dit niet nodig, omdat je in rij 17 een ronde vasten moet haken. Als je in rij 16 dus niet afhecht, scheelt dat weer wat draadjes weg te werken;) Verder (en ik denk dat dit het belangrijkste punt is), zou ik het patroon voor de geweien anders hebben gedaan. Je moet namelijk 4x hetzelfde onderdeel maken (1 patroon voor een gewei deel), maar op deze manier krijg je 2 geweien die precies dezelfde orientatie hebben. Zoals je op het plaatje ziet, moeten de geweien gespiegeld geplaatst worden, hierdoor heeft 1 gewei dus ‘de verkeerde kant’ aan de voorkant. Het had beter geweest als er twee patronen waren geschreven, één voor het linker gewei en één voor het rechter gewei. Daarnaast vond ik het in rij 4 en 6 niet helemaal duidelijk of je de vaste in dezelfde vaste moest haken. Dit heb ik uiteindelijk wel gedaan.

Naast de paar imperfecties in het patroon denk ik dat het ontwerp wel heel goed is. Je kunt het rendier relatief snel maken, omdat alles uit voor en achterzijdes is gemaakt (je haakt dus in rijen, niet spiraalsgewijs). I besloot om er een kersthanger van te maken, door een glitter lintje tussen de voor en achterzijde van het lijf te plaatsen, voordat ik deze dichtnaaide. Hij is ongeveer 20cm groot wanneer je het op haaknaald 2.5mm haakt. Ik heb 12mm zwarte veiligheidsoogjes gebruikt. Natuurlijk kun je hem ook als knuffeltje gebruiken en er bijvoorbeeld een pieper in plaatsen.

Waarom zou je het patroon voor het hertje kopen van Haked? Patroon is hier beschikbaar.

Voordelen

• Helemaal gemaakt met platte onderdelen
• Goed ontwerp, alle onderdelen passen perfect op elkaar
• Volledig gemaakt met 2 haaksteken, goed voor beginners
• Kan als hanger of knuffel worden gebruikt
• Materialen en steken lijst heel compleet
• Goedkoop
• Makkelijk om de auteur te benaderen als je vragen hebt

Nadelen

• Er zijn nog wat imperfecties in het patroon, maar deze worden mogelijk op korte termijn opgelost
• Relatief veel draadjes afhechten

Concluderend, ik denk dat dit patroon de prijs zeker waard is. Het is perfect om een schattige kerst hanger te maken en het kost je slechts een aantal uren. Ik heb de mijne weggegeven aan een vriendin en hij zal binnenkort in haar kerstboom hangen!

Christmas edition Sen, Chibi doll Amilishly Designs – Crochet pattern review

This is Sen from the book ‘Amilishly Chibi Dolls’ of Alexa Boonstra. In my previous post I reviewed this book as a whole, you can read it back here. For my second Chibi doll I wanted to let my fantasy go a bit. I choose Chibi doll Sen and I actually didn’t plan to make her in a Christmas theme, but when her dress became red I suddenly saw what she was supposed to become. Coincidently, Alexa herself also just posted two Christmas versions of the Amilishly Dolls (the big dolls Noelle and Ginny) last weekend, which you can find here. My Christmas Chibi Doll was already developed by then and I hope that this Chibi version is a nice addition to Alexa’s patterns for the big Christmas dolls!

Christmas Chibi Doll Sen

I made the borders of the dress in white on purpose and that transformed the look into a Christmas theme quite a bit already! It was just not complete yet and therefore I changed some other things here and there. Her headband became a belt for her dress (the pattern remained the same though!) and she got nice shoes that I made with the bonus pattern that is available in the back of the book.

In addition, she got eyelashes, because I wasn’t fully happy with the look of the eyes (I really need to buy some other safety eyes;)).

Then, the two most important Christmas additions were made: a Christmas hat and a gingerbread man! Sen is still a little girl, so I thought it would be fun to give her a little toy. What would have fit better than a gingerbread man? I decided to make him with felt, so it was easier to apply details. The instruction for making the gingerbread man is written below. I also designed the Chrismas hat that fits on every Chibi Doll. The pattern is written below. If you encounter problems, don’t hesitate to contact me so I could alter the pattern. Materials

• 10 grams of red cotton yarn for crochet needle 2.5mm
• Leftover white cotton yarn for crochet needle 2.5mm
• Leftover white cotton yarn for crochet needle 1.5mm
• Felt: TrueFelt 1-1.2mm Meaningful Crafts, colour 515 bear brown
• Short string of red cotton yarn
• Sewing dread colour brown, matching with the felt

The Christmas hat is crocheted with crochet needle 2.5mm with 100% cotton yarn. Crochet in spiral.

Round 1: Start in red. Crochet 6 sc in a magic ring.

Round 5: *2sc in the next st, 2sc*. Repeat between ** one time (8st)

Create a small pompon by using a pompon tool (available here) or create your own pompon tool with cardboard. Attach the pompon firmly at the tip of the hat and work away the dreads.

Gingerbread man

Download the pattern for the gingerbread man here:

Cut out the gingerbread man 2 times from brown felt. Sew by hand with white cotton yarn (for crochet needle 2.5mm) the waves at the hands and the feet. Do the same for the face. Then, sew three buttons in red (yarn for crochet needle 2.5mm) on the body. Place the two gingerbread mans on top of each other and sew around with the basic blanket stitch (See this youtube video for explanation). Don’t fill the gingerbread man! Make sure you keep your stitches small and regular for a nicer result.

Dit is Sen van het boekje ‘Amilishly Chibi Dolls’ van Alexa Boonstra. In mijn vorige post heb ik dit boekje als geheel ook geriewed, je leest het hier terug. Voor mijn tweede poppetje uit dit boek wilde ik mijn eigen fantasie een beetje los laten gaan. Ik koos het popje Sen uit en in eerste instantie had ik nog geen kerst thema in gedachten, maar toen ze een rood jurkje kreeg zag ik het opeens voor me. Toevallig had Alexa zelf dit weekend ook twee kerst edities van Amilishly Dolls (de grote poppen Noelle en Ginny) gepost op haar blog, je vindt deze hier. Mijn kerst versie van Chibi Doll Sen (kleine pop) was toen al ontwikkeld, dus ik hoop dat zij een leuke aanvulling is op de grote kerst poppen die Alexa heeft ontworpen!

Ik maakte de roesrandjes aan het jurkje expres in het wit en toen straalde ze al kerst uit! Het was alleen nog niet compleet, dus ik besloot hier en daar nog wat dingen anders te doen. Zo werd haar haarband omgetoverd in een riempje met strik voor het jurkje (het patroon is precies hetzelfde!) en kreeg ze leuke schoentjes die ik maakte aan de hand van het bonus patroon die je achterin het boekje kunt vinden. Daarnaast kreeg ze wimpers, omdat ik niet helemaal tevreden was met de look van deze oogjes (ik moet echt nog eens andere veiligheidsoogjes in gaan slaan;)). Toen kwamen de belangrijkste kersttoevoegingen: een kerstmuts en een peperkoek speeltje! Sen is nog een jong meisje, dus het leek mij leuk haar een speelgoed item te geven. Wat past er beter dan een peperkoek poppetje? Ik besloot deze in vilt te maken, omdat je dan net wat makkelijker details kunt aanbrengen. De instructie voor het maken van het peperkoek poppetje in vilt kun je hieronder lezen. Het patroon voor de kerstmuts heb ik zelf bedacht en past op elke Chibi Doll uit dit boekje. Hieronder heb ik het patroon uitgewerkt. Mocht er iets onduidelijk zijn, laat dan een opmerking achter of neem op een andere manier contact met ons op! Veel haak/knutsel plezier!

Materialen

• Restje wit katoen voor haaknaald 2.5mm

Het mutsje is gehaakt met 100% katoen garen op haaknaald 2.5mm. Haak spiraalsgewijs.

Toer 1: Begin in rood. 6v in een magische ring.

Toer 5: *2v in de volgende st, 2v*. Herhaal tussen ** een keer (8st)
Toer 6: 1v in elke st ( 8st)

Maak een kleine pom pom met een pom pom tool (hier beschikbaar) of maak er een zelf met karton. Naai de pompon stevig vast aan het uiteinde van de muts. Werk de draadjes weg.

Peperkoek poppetje

Download het patroon voor het peperkoek poppetje hier:

Knip het peperkoek poppetje 2x uit het vilt. Naai met de hand met wit katoen garen (voor haaknaald 2.5mm) de golven op de handen en voeten. Doe hetzelfde voor het gezicht. Daarna naai je 3 knoopjes in rood (garen voor haaknaald 2.5mm) op het lichaam. Plaats de twee peperkoek vormpjes op elkaar en naai rondom met de festonsteek voor vilt (zie deze youtube video voor uitleg). Vul het peperkoek poppetje niet op! Zorg er ook voor dat je steekjes klein zijn en op dezelfde afstand van elkaar staan voor een mooier resultaat.

Besides the book from Alexa Boonstra (read our review of one of her latest patterns and her newest book here. We were also gifted another book by Loes from Freubelweb: ‘Mini Waterwereld haken’ from Bas den Braver. I always liked the underwater world so I definitely wanted to see what kind of amigurumi were in the book and how I could make them.

The book is really easy to follow. Even when you’re a beginner I think this book has the right patterns for you. The lay-out is pretty clean and this makes the book very structured. It also has two flaps, which is nice when you close your book and you don’t want to search too long for the right page again. This happens to me a lot.. It also has the colours from the amigurumi on the sides of the pages, so you can also find the amigurumi you want to make by looking for the right colour. The book contains 12 patterns and is a follow-up on ‘Waterwereld haken’. The underwater animals are made with one basic pattern. The differences in the fishes are in the colour, shapes of the fins or other additional stuff like the hair or a tail. It’s fun to see how many different things you can make from one basic pattern.

The first pattern I made was ‘Zeepaardje Zoran’, a seahorse. I asked my son what he wanted me to make and he pointed his finger at Zoran. I didn’t encounter any mistakes in the pattern and I really liked the way Bas describes the patterns. As I said before, it’s easy to follow. I only had some troubles making his nose, but that was because you only need 4 single crochet in a round to make it and that takes some practice to make it nice. For the eyes I didn’t use safety eyes, because I usually like amigurumi more with sewed eyes and I didn’t have the right eyes at home while making the seahorse. But I must say it looks a bit less like a fish if you sew the eyes, because you miss the glassy look they can have. I also made Zoran in different colors than the pattern describes, but that’s because my son chose the color red for its body. That could be convenient for the Christmas tree eventually. Why would you buy the book ‘Mini Waterwereld haken’ from Bas den Braver?

Pros

• The underwater animals are easy and quick to make.
• Step-by-step explanation (sometimes even extra photos).
• A lot of variation on one basic pattern.
• Suitable for beginners.
• Very little yarn is needed, so you can make a lot of the patterns with some left over yarn.
• The small projects can easily be used as a little gift.

Cons

• It must be a theme you like or you must know someone who would really like it to make it for.

All in all, a very nice book to see, easy to make the patterns. You just have to really like the theme. I think the underwater world is beautiful, but I don’t know yet whether I personally like the combination of fish with people, but as a gift for a child I think it is funny. My son definitely thinks they are fun!

Naast het boek van Alexa Boonstra (lees hier onze review over een van haar laatste patronen uit haar nieuwste boek: https://getunraveled.wordpress.com/2020/11/10/amilishly-chibi-dolls-crochet-pattern-review-chibi-suzume/) kregen we via Loes van Freubelweb ook het boek ‘Mini Waterwereld haken’ van Bas den Braver toegestuurd. Ik kan wel zeggen dat ik echt iets heb met de onderwaterwereld dus ik was erg benieuwd naar de amigurumi die in dit boek zouden staan en hoe je ze kan maken.

Het boek is ontzettend makkelijk te volgen. Zelfs als beginner kan je met dit boek goed aan de slag! The lay-out van het boek is rustig en ziet er overzichtelijk uit. Het heeft ook twee van die flappen aan de cover vastzitten, waardoor je je boek makkelijker weer opendoet op de juiste bladzijde. Ik houd ervan, want ik ben altijd een uur aan het bladeren. Wat extra handig is, is dat de zijkanten van de bladzijdes de hoofdkleur van de vissen hebben, waardoor je nog sneller en makkelijker bij het juiste patroon uitkomt.
Het boek bevat 12 patronen en gaat eigenlijk samen met het boek ‘Waterwereld haken’. De onderwaterdiertjes worden allemaal gemaakt vanuit één basispatroon. De verschillen in de vissen worden gemaakt door het kleurgebruik, vormen van de vinnen, of andere toevoegingen zoals haar of een staart. Het is leuk om te zien hoeveel verschillende dingen je kunt maken uit één basispatroon.

Het eerste patroon wat ik uit het boek heb gemaakt is ‘Zeepaardje Zoran’. Ik vroeg aan mijn zoontje welk patroon ik moest maken en hij wees deze aan. Tijdens het maken van dit patroon ben ik geen fouten tegengekomen en ik vond de werkwijze van het patroon heel goed beschreven door Bas. Zoals ik eerder al zei, het is heel toegankelijk beschreven. Het enige waar ik zelf tegenaan liep, was het maken van de neus. Deze wordt gemaakt met maar vier vasten in een ring en dat vind ik altijd een gepriegel om dat netjes te krijgen. Dit ligt dus verder niet aan het patroon, maar aan het feit dat ik er minder geduld voor heb. Voor de ogen worden veiligheidsogen geadviseerd, deze had ik echter niet in huis en ik vind het meestal mooier wanneer ogen geborduurd zijn bij een amigurumi, maar ik moet achteraf toegeven dat het voor een vis misschien wel leuker is als de ogen een beetje ‘glazig’ zijn. Ook de kleuren van het patroon heb ik niet gevolgd, maar mijn zoontje wilde graag rood en hier heb ik Zoran op aangepast. Zo kan deze straks misschien met kerst nog ergens opgehangen worden. Hieronder zet ik mijn voor- en nadelen even op een rijtje.

Voordelen

• De onderwaterdiertjes zijn makkelijk en snel te maken.
• Er wordt stap-voor-stap uitleg gegeven (soms zijn er ook extra foto’s bij de uitleg gedaan)
• Er is veel variatie op één basispatroon.
• Geschikt voor beginners.
• Er is weinig katoen nodig, dus kan ook goed met restjes!
• De kleine projecten zijn leuk en handig om weg te geven als cadeautjes.

Nadelen

• Je moet wel echt van dit thema houden of je moet iemand kennen die dit thema heel leuk vindt.
• Het is nog niet in het Engels of in een andere taal beschikbaar (maar kijk op de website, zodat je kunt zien wat je hier zelf eventueel aan kan doen http://www.zabbez.com/books/#.X6xIfy-iFBw)

Al met al een heel mooi boek om te zien, makkelijk om er patronen uit te maken. Je moet alleen wel echt van het thema houden. Ik vind de onderwaterwereld mooi, maar ik weet bijvoorbeeld nog niet of ik de combinatie van vissen met mensen persoonlijk heel leuk vind. Als cadeau voor een kind vind ik het dan wel weer grappig. Mijn zoontje vindt het bijvoorbeeld wel heel erg leuk om mee te spelen, dus ik ga er toch zeker nog een paar maken.

Amilishly Chibi Dolls – Crochet pattern review Chibi Suzume

It was such a joy to receive this new book from Alexa Boonstra called ‘Amilishly Chibi Dolls‘ and to create these cute little Japanese dolls! The fact that these are Japanese inspired is already visible with the cover. This is made from right to left instead of left to right, such a nice touch! It had a really nice surprise effect on me. Throughout the book you will find some other Japanese touches as well, such as vertically written headers and some Japanese cartoons. You will find 12 doll patterns with a bonus pattern for shoes (!) in this book. Amilishly Chibi Dolls is the follow-up on the book ‘Amilishly Dolls’, which contains patterns for bigger dolls.

The first doll I created is Suzume, which also shines on the cover of the book. It was not an easy choice though, since all those cute dolls were begging me to make them;) I went for Suzume, because she is kinda iconic with being on the cover of both books (also on the cover of the previously published Amilishly Dolls book).

While making Suzume I encountered little problems while reading the pattern. The only thing that I considered a bit vague was when you exactly need to make the 2ch to attach the two legs to each other (the pattern doesn’t specify this). You will see that it is important to do this on the side of the leg, so you do need to crochet 3sc first. When you now attach the second leg the two feet will automatically point straight forward instead of sideways. Further, you need to read very carefully how every strand of the hair is made. In some cases a strand is indicated as S3, S4 etc, but this is not done consistently (the addition of S1, S2 and some others are missing for example). The description is definitely correct, but it would have been helpful if all strands had an ‘Sx’ indication.

I made two changes to this pattern: one was the eye colour, I unfortunately had only black eyes in stock and the other one was the way to attach the hair. The pattern describes to glue the strands with textile glue, but unfortunately I didn’t have any textile glue available so I decided to try to just attach them with small stitches. I made a tiny stitch halfway the hair strand and at the bottom of each strand. The hair strands did stay in place, but maybe if a child would play with it they could slide a bit away (so you can see the skin colour). I guess both ways work, so it’s up to you to decide what you prefer;)

So why would you buy the book Amilishly Chibi Dolls of Alexa Boonstra (Available here)?

• Really original Japanese-style designs
• Dolls are almost completely made in one piece, so minimal cutting/knotting is needed
• A lot of patterns, 12 + 1 bonus pattern
• Beautiful photography
• Step-by-step explanation
• Very little yarn is needed to make the hand-sized dolls. Perfect to finish up your scraps!
• It gives you the perfect base to design your own dolls

Cons

• Not available in English yet
• 6mm coloured sparkle eyes are difficult to find, but the author sells them in her own webshop (you can find them here)

In conclusion, I’m super happy that I got the chance to try out this brand new book! I secretly already started working on my own version of one of the other chibi patterns and soon I will show you the result! Amilishly definitely got another fan with me and it made me super curious to try out her first book as well with the bigger sized dolls. There are so many possibilities to design your own dolls with these that it won’t get boring. This book is therefore one of my new favourites!

Het was een hele eer om dit boek van Alexa Boonstra, genaamd ‘ Amilishly Chibi Dolls’ te ontvangen en deze schattige Japanse poppetjes te maken! Het feit dat dit boek een Japans thema heeft is al terug te zien aan de kaft. Deze is namelijk van rechts naar links in plaats van van links naar rechts gemaakt, zo’n originele aanpassing! Het had echt een leuk verrassingseffect. In het boek zal je ook nog andere Japanse stijlen terug vinden, zoals verticale titels en Japanse cartoons. Er staan 12 patronen in voor de poppetjes + nog een bonus patroon voor schoentjes. Amilishly Chibi Dolls is het opvolgende boek na ‘Amilishly Dolls’, welke patronen bevat voor grotere poppen.

Het eerste poppetje wat ik heb gehaakt is Suzume, welke ook schittert op de kaft van het boek. Het was niet een gemakkelijke keuze, want al die schattige poppetjes smeekten me om gemaakt te worden;) Ik ben voor Suzume gegaan, omdat ze wel een soort icoon is en zowel op de kaft van dit boek als ook op de kaft van het eerder verschenen boek (Amilishly Dolls) afgebeeld staat.

Ik ben weinig moeilijkheden tegengekomen in het patroon. Het enige wat ik een beetje vaag vond is de beschrijving voor het aan elkaar zetten van de twee benen (het patroon specificeert dit niet). Je zult zien dat het belangrijk is om dit te doen aan de zijkant van het beentje, dus je moet eerst 3v verder haken voordat je de 2 lossen haakt. Als je nu het tweede been aan het eerste been vastzet zullen de voetjes automatisch naar voren wijzen in plaats van naar de zijkant.

Verder moet je goed lezen hoe je de haarstrengen moet haken. Voor sommige haarstrengen is er een indicatie weergegeven met S3, S4 etc, maar dit is niet consistent gedaan (de toevoeging van S1, S2 en S6-S11 ontbreken bijvoorbeeld). Zeker voor de strengen van S6-S11 was het verwarrend, omdat je 2 verschillende patronen moet alterneren. Het had dus wel fijn geweest als het patroon per streng was uitgeschreven met een ‘Sx’ indicatie.

Ik heb twee dingen in dit patroon anders gedaan; het eerste is de oogkleur, ik had helaas alleen maar zwarte oogjes op voorraad en het tweede was de manier waarop het haar vast wordt gemaakt. Het patroon beschrijft dat je textiellijm moet gebruiken om de haren op het hoofd te bevestigen. Ik had helaas ook geen textiellijm voor handen, dus ik heb halverwege elke streng en aan het einde van elke streng (net boven de nek) een klein steekje gedaan met dezelfde kleur als het haar. De strengen bedekken keurig de hoofdhuid, maar het zou kunnen zijn dat als een kind ermee zou spelen dat ze alsnog een beetje gaan verschuiven. Voor decoratie doeleinden is het met steekjes dus prima, anders kun je misschien toch beter lijmen. Beiden zal werken, dus het is aan jou om te kiezen;)

Waarom zou je het boek ‘Amilishly Chibi Dolls’ van Alexa Boosntra moeten kopen?

Voordelen

• Originele Japanse-stijl ontwerpen
• Poppetjes zijn bijna volledig gemaakt in 1 onderdeel, dus je hoeft minimaal af te hechten
• Veel patronen, 12 + 1 bonus patroon
• Mooie fotografie
• Stap-voor-stap uitleg
• Je hebt weinig katoendraad nodig, dus het is perfect om je restjes op te maken!
• Het geeft de perfecte basis om je eigen poppetjes te ontwerpen

Nadelen

• De 6mm gekleurde glitteroogjes die door het gehele boek worden gebruikt zijn moeilijk te verkrijgen. De auteur verkoopt ze wel via haar eigen webshop (je vindt ze hier)

Concluderend, ik ben super blij dat ik de kans heb gekregen dit splinternieuwe boek uit te proberen! Ik ben stiekem al bezig met mijn volgende chibi doll met mijn eigen draai eraan, welke ik binnenkort met jullie zal delen! Amilishly heeft er zeker weer een fan bij en dit boek heeft mij erg nieuwsgierig gemaakt om haar eerste boek ook uit te gaan proberen! Er zijn zoveel opties om je eigen poppetjes hiermee te ontwerpen dat het dus niet saai zal worden. Daarom is dit boek zeker een van mijn nieuwe favorieten!

DIY – crocheting corsages

Already seven years ago Lise helped me with a big project. I wanted to crochet corsages for my wedding. I didn’t want to spent any money on flowers who would possibly be thrown away afterwards. Although I doubt if everyone still has its corsage.
The colors for the wedding were red and a creamy white, so I used these colors for the corsages. I remember trying out a lot of different flower and leaf patterns before we had the right ones matching together. Lise eventually helped me crocheting because I needed to make 26 of these corsages and had to attach them as well.
Below I will describe the different patterns you need to make these corsages. But I want to remind you that these patterns aren’t my own. I just couldn’t find where I got the patterns from. If you recognize the pattern, please let us know, so we can add it to this post. I also made the corsages with two different leafs but I couldn’t find the pattern for the second leaf. You can also make two of the same or only one. What you prefer most!

Materials

• Creamy white cotton/linen mix (for the rose)
• Burgundy acryl/wool mix (for the leaves)
• Brooch pins
• Needle
• Thread
• Crochet needle 3.0 mm
• Creamy white mesh

Abbreviations

ch= chain
slst= slip stitch
sc= single crochet
hdc: half double crochet
dc= double crochet
tr= triple crochet
st=stitch

Rose

round 1: Chain 41
round 2: Dc in 4th stitch from the needle. Chain 2. 2dc in same stitch. Repeat until the end of the row: chain 1, skip 2 stitches from the chain, in next stitch 2dc, chain 2 and 2dc.
round 3: At the end of the row, turning chain and turn your work. 1hdc in first ‘chain 2 opening’. Chain 3, 6dc in same opening. Repeat until the end of the row: 1sc in ‘chain 1 opening’, 7dc in ‘chain 2 opening’.

Now you’re finished, you can cut a piece of mesh which has the same length or a tiny bit longer than the rose you made. Cut it twice as wide as the crocheted rose and fold it in half.
Now you can roll up the rose with the mesh in-between it. I put it on top of the rose while I rolled it up. Try to stitch the rose together with the mesh. I don’t have an perfect way of describing how to attach the rose to the mesh, but you need to try some things out and see what works for you. I remember it wasn’t the easiest part of making the corsage.

Leafs (make 2)

round 1: Chain 10 and close the chain with a slst in the first stitch.
round 2: Chain 1 (counts as a sc). Crochet in the ring: [4sc, 1hdc, 1dc, 1tc, chain 3, 1tc, 1dc, 1hdc, 4sc]. Close with 1 slst in first ‘chain 1’.
round 3: Chain 5 (counts as a tc). [1tc, 1dc] in 1sc. [1dc, 1hdc] in 1sc. [1sc, chain 2] in 2sc, in 1hdc, in 1dc and in 1tc.
Crochet in ‘chain 3’ part: [1sc, chain 3, 1dc, chain 7 and 1slst in 7th chain from the needle, 1dc, chain 3, 1sc]. [chain 2, 1sc] in 1tc, in 1dc, in 1hdc and in 2sc. [1hdc, 1dc] in 1sc. [1dc, 1tc] in 1sc. Slst in ‘chain 5’ from the beginning of the round.
stem: Chain 9. Crochet backwards, skip 2 chained stitches and crochet 1slst in the other 7 chained stitches and 1slst in a chain from round 3.

Fasten off and get rid of the loose threads.

Put together

Take a needle and some thread and stitch the leafs to the rose in a way you think it’s nice. You also need to attach the brooch pin on the back. The rose with leafs can be a bit heavy so make sure you attach it in a way that the rose will be steady when you attach it to the clothing.
Your corsage is ready to be used!

Alweer zeven jaar geleden hielp Lise mij met een groot project. Ik wilde graag zelfgemaakte corsages voor mijn gasten op de bruiloft. Ook had ik geen zin om geld uit te geven aan bloemen die waarschijnlijk de dagen erna gelijk weggegooid zouden worden. Al is het nu de vraag natuurlijk of iedereen zijn corsage nog heeft, maar het ging om het idee.
De kleuren op de bruiloft waren een beetje bordeaux rood en crème, dus deze kleuren wilde ik terug laten komen in de corsages. Ik weet nog dat we heel veel verschillende patronen van bloemen en blaadjes hebben uitgeprobeerd voordat we de juiste patronen tegenkwamen die goed bij elkaar pasten. Lise heeft me toen geholpen om de corsages te haken, want het moesten er wel 26 worden en we moesten ze ook aan elkaar naaien.
Hieronder zal ik een beschrijving geven van de verschillende patronen. Ik wil wel even gezegd hebben, dat deze patronen niet van onszelf zijn, maar ik kon na zeven jaar niet meer terugvinden waar we deze patronen vandaan hebben getoverd. Mocht je weten voor wie de credits zijn, laat het ons dan gerust weten, dan vermelden wij het erbij.

Materialen

• Crème kleurig katoen/linnen mix (voor de roos)
• Bordeaux rood acryl/wol mix (voor de blaadjes)
• Broche speldjes
• Naald
• Draad
• Haaknaald 3.0 mm
• Crèmekleurige mesh

Afkortingen

l = losse
v = vaste
hv = halve vaste
hstk = half stokje
stk = stokje
dstk = dubbel stokje
st = steek

Roos

toer 1: Haak 41 losse.
toer 2: Maak 1 stk in de vierde steek vanaf de naald. Haak nog 2 l en 2 stk in dezelfde steek. Vanaf nu herhaal je het volgende tot het einde van de rij: 1 l, sla 2 l over, in de volgende steek: 2 stk, 2 l en 2 stk.
toer 3: Haak een keerlosse en keer je werk. Haak vervolgens een hv in de 2 losse-opening. Haak 3 l en 6 stk in dezelfde opening. Vanaf nu herhaal je het volgende tot het einde van de rij: 1 v in de 1 losse-opening, 7 stk in de 2 losse-opening.

Nu je de roos af hebt, kan je een stukje mesh afknippen wat dezelfde lengte heeft (of misschien een cm langer) als de roos. Knip het twee keer zo wijd als de roos en vouw het dubbel.
Je kan de mesh nu in de roos mee rollen. Ik heb de mesh bovenop de roos gelegd, terwijl ik het oprolde. Probeer dit geheel aan elkaar te naaien aan de onderkant (bij de 41 losse steken). Ik heb geen perfecte oplossing van hoe je dit het makkelijkste aanpakt. Je moet het een beetje proberen en dan kijken of het lukt. Ik kan mij herinneren dat de eerste paar roosjes echt niet zo mooi waren als de laatste die ik naaide, maar probeer het uit en kijk wat voor jou werkt.

Bladeren (maak er twee)

toer 1: Haak 10 l, sluit deze losse ketting tot een ring door een hv te haken in de 1e l.
toer 2: 1 l (telt als v). Haak in de ring de volgende st: [4 v, 1 hstk, 1 stk, 1 dstk, 3 l, 1 dstk, 1 stk, 1 hstk, 4 v]. Sluit met 1 hv in de eerste 1 l.
toer 3: 5 l (telt als dstk). [1 dstk, 1 stk] in 1v. [1 stk, 1 hstk] in 1 v. [1 v, 2 l] in 2 v, in 1 hstk, in 1 stk en in 1 dstk. Haak in 3 l-punt: [1 v, 3 l, 1 stk, 7 l en 1 hv in 7e l vanaf haak, 1 stk, 3 l, 1 v]. [2 l, 1 v] in 1 dstk, in 1 stk, in 1 hstk en in 2 v. [1 hstk, 1 stk] in 1 v. [1 stk, 1 dstk] in 1 v. Sluit met 1 hv in 5e l of eerste 5 l.
steel: 9 l. Haak terug omhoog in de steel, sla 2 l over en haak 1 hv in 7 l. 1 hv in de losse waar toer 3 mee gestart is.

Hecht af en werk de draadjes weg.

Aan elkaar zetten
Nu rest je nog één ding en dat is de roos en de blaadjes aan elkaar naaien. Doe dit ook weer op een manier die je zelf mooi vindt. Naai ook de borduurspeld achterop het blad. Houd er rekening mee dat de roos met de blaadjes best wel zwaar kunnen zijn, dus naai de speld er zo op dat de roos mooi blijft zitten wanneer je het op de kleding vastspeldt.
Je corsage is nu klaar om te gebruiken!

Recently I bought the book ‘My Felt doll’ from Shelly Down (which is available here) and I completely fell in love with it! It brings me back to my childhood, because I loved to play with every kind of doll. The accessories, the possibility to dress them and to take them along to whatever place we were going were just a few reasons why I was inseparable of my dolls. I still have most of them (and I’m definitely not planning to throw them away). I saw this book passing by on a Facebook group and became curious. I don’t own so many felt books yet, so I decided I could buy this one. It looked a bit complicated at the first sight, but it was much easier than expected. Here I review the book in general and show you the first doll that I made: the little mermaid! For this book I used the following materials:

Pros

• Explanation of techniques
• Index at the back

Cons

• A lot of different types of materials are needed: felt, beads, embroidery yarn, thick/wool yarn, buttons etc.
• Everything is hand sewed and with a lot of details, therefore it is relatively time-consuming to make one doll
• Only available in English

In summary: you need to be patient and have a bit of a precise hand, but it is 100% worth the time and effort! I was really happy with the first result and I’m convinced that I would make all of them eventually. Here you can see that I used simple acrylic yarn for her hair, because that is what I had available. I’m very curious to try other types of yarn too!

I love the fact that every doll comes with an accessory. For the mermaid, there was an extra option to make this flower. I attached an elastic to it, so I could put it around her wrist, but also in her hair. In the next picture you see how that looks like!

This is how she looks when you braid her hair. I’m sure the girl who will receive this doll as present will try a lot of different hairstyles on her! I think it would be nice to make some felt shells or starfish too, so I might work on those patterns myself and keep you updated! Did you already make some additional accessories for her? I would love to see them!

I learned some new sewing stitches while making this doll (for example the stitch to make the shell bikini top). It is not perfect yet, but I’m sure that with some practice it will look better every single time!

Pas geleden kocht ik het boek ‘My Felt doll’ van Shelly Down (welke je hier kunt kopen) en ik ben er helemaal verliefd op geworden! Het doet mij aan mijn kinderjaren denken, omdat ik gek was op elke pop. De accessoires, de mogelijkheid om ze aan te kleden en om ze mee te nemen naar wat voor plek dan ook waren een paar redenen dat ik onafscheidelijk van ze was. Ik heb ze bijna allemaal nog (en ik ben ze zeker niet van plan weg te gooien). Ik zag dit boek voorbijkomen op Facebook en het had gelijk mijn aandacht getrokken. Ik heb nog niet zoveel vilt boeken, dus ik besloot deze te kopen. Het zag er een beetje gecompliceerd uit zo op het oog, maar het was uiteindelijk makkelijker dan ik dacht. Hier review ik het boek in het algemeen en laat ik je de eerste pop zien die ik gemaakt heb: de kleine zeemeermin! Voor dit patroon heb ik gebruik gemaakt van de volgende materialen:

Minpunten

• Je hebt veel verschillende materialen nodig: vilt, kraaltjes, naaigaren, wol, knoopjes etc.
• Alles is met de hand genaaid met veel detailwerk, daardoor kost het relatief veel tijd om een pop te maken
• Alleen in het Engels uitgegeven

Samengevat: je moet geduldig zijn en een precieze hand hebben, maar het is je tijd en energie 100% waard! Ik was heel blij met het eerste resultaat en ik ben ervan overtuigd dat ik ze uiteindelijk allemaal ga maken. Hier kun je zien dat ik simpel acryl garen heb gebruikt voor het haar, omdat ik dat toevallig nog had. Ik ben erg nieuwsgierig om andere type garen te proberen voor het haar!

Ik vind het super leuk dat elke pop met accessoires komt. Voor de kleine zeemeermin was dit een bloemetje. Ik heb er een elastiekje aan vastgezet, zodat ik het om haar pols of in haar haar kon doen. In de volgende foto zie je hoe dat eruit ziet!

Dit is hoe ze eruit ziet wanneer je haar haar vlecht. Ik weet zeker dat het meisje dat deze pop cadeau gaat krijgen veel verschillende haarstijlen zult uitproberen! Ik denk dat het leuk zou zijn om wat vilt schelpen en een zeester hierbij te maken, dus dit ga ik misschien later nog ontwerpen. Ik zal jullie updaten hierover! Ik heb ook wat nieuwe naaitechnieken geleerd bij het maken van deze pop (bijvoorbeeld de steek voor het maken van de schelp bikini top). Het is nog niet perfect, maar ik weet zeker dat met wat oefening het steeds beter wordt!
