Presents ‘ juffendag’ – free spool knitting project

This week it was ‘juffendag’ (teacher’s day). I always like to give something handmade if I can find the right project. Most fun is to design it myself, by using bits of other great ideas.

My husband gave me a spool knitter last December and so far I haven’t found the best projects for it yet and I also find it hard to design something a lot of other people will like and actually use. I really like the names which are mostly made with a spool knitter or by some die hards, by hand. But I don’t think most teachers will actually have them in there house for a long time (correct me if I’m wrong here). And I think it would be a waste to make something they don’t really use. Thinking about these terms I came up with the idea to make the name ‘juf’ (which means teacher, for females) and sew this on a bag I bought at the Albert Heijn (non spon). It’s a bag used for groceries and I use these bags a lot myself. Sometimes you see them as well with this full crocheted cover. In this blogpost I will tell you what you need and how to make it yourself. Our teachers were really happy with the bag.

Materials

• Spool knitter (I used this one)
• Yarn with the right size for your spoolknitter
• Jute bag (I bought mines at Albert Heijn, they don’t sell them on their website but you can just put ‘jute bag Albert Heijn’ at your search system and you will get the look of it)
• Needle
• Pins
• Thread to sew
• Scissors

How to

1. Buy a bag or make one yourself.
2. Use your yarn to figure out how big you want the letters to be. I just used my imagination and wanted them pretty big on the bag, but you can make it smaller if you have less time. When you know how long your thread must be to make your letter, cut it off and keep it as a guideline for the length of your spool knitted thread. You can also draw the letters on paper first so you can make multiple bags with the same letters.
3. Make the desired length of thread with your spool knitter and the chosen yarn.
4. Because I didn’t wrote my letters on a paper I just made the word ‘juf’ on the bags in the way I liked it and pinned the thread to the bag.
5. Take your needle and thread to sew and start attaching the spool knitted thread to the bag. It would be best to use a thread to use in the same color as your spool knitted thread. I didn’t have these colors so I just tried to sew the letters invisible. A spool knitted thread is hollow on the inside, this way you can try to only sew the downside part and use the hollow part to get rid of your thread without seeing it. If this is to much work try to sew your thread in between the stitches of the spool knitted thread, if you make narrow stitches big chance you won’t even see them.
6. Fasten off and work away all threads.

Deze week was het ‘juffendag’. Ik vind het altijd leuk om iets zelfgemaakts te geven mits ik het juiste project te krijgen. Het meest leuke vind ik het dan ook nog om zelf een project te ontwerpen, door bijvoorbeeld goede ideeën te combineren.

Afgelopen december kreeg ik van mijn man een punnikmolen cadeau en tot nu toe vind ik het best wel lastig om er goede projecten mee te verzinnen. Ik wil dan ook graag iets vernieuwends verzinnen, wat andere mensen dan makkelijk en snel kunnen maken en gebruiken, maar dat is nog best lastig. Ik vind de naamhangers die gepunnikt worden, zowel met een punnikmolen als door sommige die hards met de hand, wel altijd heel leuk om te zien. Maar eentje met het woord ‘juf’ gaat dan denk ik toch snel niet echt opgehangen worden in huis (laat het gerust weten wanneer ik er compleet naast zit). Ik wilde in ieder geval iets maken wat vaker gebruikt zou kunnen worden. Toen ik er een tijdje over na had gedacht, kwam ik op het idee om ‘juf’ te punniken en deze dan te naaien op een boodschappentas van de Albert Heijn. Je weet wel, zo’n jute! Soms zijn er ook mensen die complete hoezen eromheen haken. Zelf heb ik wel vier van die tassen (zonder het gehaakte eromheen dan). In deze blogpost vertel ik je in ieder geval hoe je zelf zo’n tas zou kunnen maken.

Materialen

• Punnikmolen (Ik gebruik deze)
• Katoen dat geschikt is om te gebruiken voor jouw punnikmolen
• Jute tas (bijvoorbeeld die van Albert Heijn, staat niet op internet maar typ het in in je zoekmachine en misschien vind je ze nog wel, anders gewoon in de winkel natuurlijk)
• Naald
• Spelden
• Draad om mee te naaien
• Schaar

Werkbeschrijving

1. Koop een tas of maak er zelf één.
2. Gebruik je katoen om uit te zoeken hoelang je gepunnikte draad moet worden om de letters te maken. Ik gebruikte m’n fantasie en wilde de letters groot op de tas, maar je kan ze natuurlijk ook kleiner maken wanneer je bijvoorbeeld minder tijd hebt. Als je weet hoe lang je draad moet zijn voor jouw letters, knip de draad dan af. Dit wordt je meetlint als het ware. Je kan natuurlijk ook de letters eerst tekenen op papier, zo kan je bijvoorbeeld meerdere tassen maken met dezelfde grootte letters.
3. Punnik nu de gewenste lengte met de punnikmolen.
4. Omdat ik dus geen letters had getekend, heb ik met de gepunnikte draad het woord ‘juf’ op de tas neergelegd en het woord vastgespeld.
5. Gebruik nu je naald en draad om mee te naaien en naai je gepunnikte woord vast aan de tas. Je kan hier dus het beste draad voor gebruiken in dezelfde kleur als je katoen. Ik had deze kleuren niet en dus heb ik geprobeerd het onzichtbaar vast te naaien. Een gepunnikte draad is van binnen hol, waardoor je heel mooi alleen de onderkant vast zou kunnen naaien en je dus van boven niets ziet. Als dit teveel werk is, probeer dan te naaien tussen de steken door (tussen de v’tjes), als je kleine steken maakt, zie je dit waarschijnlijk nauwelijks.
6. Hecht af en werk alle loshangende draden weg.
