Special news and my first handmade baby sleeping bag

You may wonder what happened in the last couple of months, but don’t worry, there is only good news to share;) In January I managed to submit my Ph.D. thesis (hurray!) and I am now waiting for the committee to get it checked and approved. With a bit of luck I can defend the thesis just before the summer months and that’s actually very important, because from this August on our lives will look totally different!

I am happy to share that we expect our first baby this year! We are so excited (but definitely also scared)! We are now slowly preparing the babyroom and collecting everything we will need, which is definitely among the fun things to do during the pregnancy:) It was a rollercoaster during the first trimester, with a lot of nausea, food aversions, extreme tiredness and a Ph.D. thesis that had to be submitted. The blog-writing break was therefore unavoidable, but it doesn’t mean I didn’t craft anything in the meantime. Below you see the very first item I made for our own little one (this time it won’t be a present;)): my first handmade baby sleeping bag!

I bought the pattern in our local sewing shop and used tricot fabric that I still had in stock. It’s definitely not perfect, because I need to practice with the zipper and biaisband, but I guess it will do it’s job;) My husband loved it, so even though I was critical on the imperfections, we will definitely use it when the time is there. More baby items will follow for sure!

Je vraagt je misschien af wat er gebeurd is in de afgelopen maanden, maar geen zorgen, er is alleen maar goed nieuws te delen;) Afgelopen januari heb ik eindelijk mijn Ph.D. thesis kunnen inleveren (hoera!) en op dit moment ben ik aan het wachten op de feedback en goedkeuring van de commissie. Met een beetje geluk kan ik nog voor de zomer het proefschrift verdedigen en dat is eigenlijk wel heel erg belangrijk, want vanaf deze augustus gaat ons leven er heel anders uitzien!

Ik ben blij om te delen dat wij onze eerste baby verwachten dit jaar! We zien er zo enorm naar uit (maar vinden het ook wel heel spannend)! We zijn nu langzaam begonnen met het voorbereiden van de babykamer en het verzamelen van de eerste spulletjes, wat zeker tot de leukste bezigheden tijdens de zwangerschap behoren;) Het was een achtbaan tijdens het eerste trimester, met veel misselijkheid, voedselaversies, extreme vermoeidheid en een proefschrift wat ingeleverd moest worden. Een pauze van het bloggen was dus even onvermijdelijk, maar dit betekent niet dat ik niets heb gemaakt in de tussentijd. Hierboven zien jullie het allereerste item wat ik genaaid heb voor onze kleine (deze keer is het dus geen cadeautje voor iemand anders;)): mijn eerste baby slaapzak!

Ik heb het patroon gekocht in de lokale naaiwinkel en heb tricot stof gebruikt wat ik nog op voorraad had. Het is zeker niet perfect, omdat ik nog wat moet oefenen met het inzetten van ritsen en biaisband, maar het zal vast functioneel zijn;) Mijn man vindt de slaapzak heel erg leuk, dus ondanks de imperfecties zullen we hem dus wel gaan gebruiken. Meer baby items zullen binnenkort volgen!

Many mornings socks

These days I’ve been so busy that I didn’t have the energy or inspiration to write a post. We are working on our attic, changing my sons room, working on our garden and I still need to get used to my new work. I just can’t find the time to relax and craft. Have you ever had similar periods?

One of my projects I still wanted to tell you about, is a project I got from my mother-in-law. She bought socks for the entire family for Sinterklaas and she bought them at Many Mornings. They produce and make their socks in Poland. They also want to reduce their waste, so you can buy a Sock Monkey DIY-kit with parts of left-over socks and make something yourself. My mother-in-law also gave us this kit. Unfortunately the kit isn’t always available. They do want to do this in the future, but for now they only sell this kit in certain seasons.

I think the idea of re-using materials like in this kit is so much fun. You can enjoy your socks and you can make a fun little project. I’m definitely not great in hand sewing but my son loved the finished project and the monkey became one of his cuddle crew. So if you want to buy fun socks, keep an eye out for this fun company!

Afgelopen dagen was ik zo druk en onrustig met van alles en nog wat, dat ik geen energie en inspiratie had voor het schrijven van een blog. We zijn thuis bezig met het opknappen van de zolder, de kamer van mijn zoontje en we zijn begonnen met het aanleggen van een ecologische achtertuin en ondertussen ben ik me nog aan het inwerken op mijn nieuwe werk. Weinig tijd om te relaxen en te handwerken dus. Hebben jullie ook weleens van dit soort periodes?

Ondanks de drukte heb ik wel nog een leuk projectje om met jullie te delen. Het is een cadeautje wat ik kreeg van mijn schoonmoeder met Sinterklaas. Zij kocht namelijk sokken voor de hele familie bij Many Mornings. Het is een bedrijf wat sokken produceert en maakt in Polen. Ook zijn ze bezig met het verzinnen wat ze het beste met hun afval kunnen doen, zodat ze zo min mogelijk hoeven weg te gooien. Een van die ideeën is het verkopen van de Sock Monkey DIY-kit. Met deze kit kan je zelf een aap naaien van restjes sokken. Mijn schoonmoeder had voor ons dus ook zo’n kit besteld. Super grappig! Helaas is de kit niet alijd beschikbaar zag ik. Dit is wel een van de pijlers voor de toekomst, maar tot nu toe verkopen ze het alleen in een bepaald seizoen.

Ik vind het concept wel echt ontzettend leuk! De motiefjes zijn ook zo vrolijk. Je hebt in ieder geval plezier van de sokken en je kan nog wat leuks maken van restjes. Ik ben helaas niet zo’n ster in dingen met de hand naaien, maar mijn zoontje vond het eindresultaat fantastisch en kon niet wachten tot de aap helemaal af was. Maar, wil je dus een leuk en origineel DIY cadeautje aan iemand geven, dan is dit bedrijf misschien wel leuk om in de gaten te houden!

Sewing a simple leather pouch

Last Sunday Elseline came to visit me and she brought a whole pile of leather samples from a couch shop, which she got from a friend. I had never seen so many leather samples! Of course, we wanted to make something immediately:) To practice working with leather, we decided to go for a simple zipper pouch. The basic steps come from this video from MADE Everyday, but we did not make an inner lining, because the back side of the leather was actually really beautiful!

Fortunately, Elseline brought some leather needles for the sewing machine, but we also found out that not every machine can handle working with thick leather. So keep this in mind;) One leather sample was exactly enough for one pouch with a width of 23cm and a height of 18 cm. Since leather does not fray, we decided not to fold it when sewing the zipper. After attaching the two sides to the zipper, we placed the right sides together, opened the zipper, and sewed it all around. We cut the corners and flipped inside out. Super easy and a perfect way to try working with leather! What should our next project be? Let us know your ideas!

Afgelopen zondag kwam Elseline bij mij langs en ze bracht een hele stapel leer samples van een winkel, welke ze van een vriendin heeft gehad. Ik had nog nooit zo veel leer samples bij elkaar gezien! Natuurlijk wilden we gelijk iets gaan maken:) Om het werken met leer te oefenen besloten we een simpele etui te maken. De basissteppen komen uit deze video van MADE Everyday, maar we hebben geen voering gemaakt, omdat de verkeerde kant van het leer eigenlijk heel mooi is!

Gelukkig had Elseline wat leernaalden voor de naaimachine meegenomen, maar we kwamen er ook achter dat niet elke machine het leer aankon. Houd dit dus in gedachten;) Een leer sample was precies genoeg voor 1 etui met een breedte van 23cm en een hoogte van 18cm. Omdat leer niet rafelt, besloten we het niet om te vouwen bij het bevestigen van de rits. Nadat we de rits aan de twee zijdes hadden genaaid, legden we de goede kant op elkaar en openden we de rits. Daarna hebben we rondom genaaid, de hoekjes geknipt en de etui binnenstebuiten gekeerd. Super makkelijk en perfect om het werken met leer te oefenen! Wat zou ons volgende leer project moeten zijn? Flower kimono – Sewing pattern review

A really good friend of mine gifted me the book ‘Dresses 2’ from La Maison Victor (available here) when my Ph.D. contract finished last year. Although I still need to defend my thesis, this was a little celebration for closing a difficult chapter of my life. With this book, I could bring my sewing skills to the next level and relax a bit during the months I had to start looking for a new job as well. I can say that this book was a nice distraction;) I fell in love with the designs from La Maison Victor and the book is truly beautiful. Basic techniques are explained properly and super clear instructions are included. The book includes 15 patterns (!) for all kinds of dresses, so the price/quality is incredible. My friend also gave me a beautiful petrol-colored fabric and everything I would need to make the dress that you see on the front cover of the book. Since this dress is not the easiest one to make, I decided to start making something a bit more simple first.

I picked the pattern for a kimono dress because I really like to wear a bit oversized clothing. Comfy and classy are in my eyes the best combination. Depending on the kind of fabric you chose, the dress can get a totally different look. I choose a viscose with a floral pattern (since I still had it in my stash) and I think it goes super well as a spring/summer dress. I secretly wore it in the winter already, with black tights and a cardigan, because I was too impatient haha. As you can see in the picture, the dress has quite a deep v-neck. I, therefore, decided to place the buttons about 20cm lower on each side than indicated, so the v-neck becomes less deep and fits my body type better. The belt is very long and can be worn with the bowtie in front or in the back, I love both options. I wouldn’t say this is the easiest dress I ever sewed, but with a bit of effort, a beginner can make this. The book will explain to you all the difficult things in detail, so no need to spend hours on the internet while you go. Definitely a plus for this. I cannot wait to make the next dress out of this book!

Een hele goede vriendin gaf me het boek ‘Jurken 2’ cadeau van La Maison Victor (hier beschikbaar) toen mijn Ph.D. contract ten einde liep vorig jaar. Ondanks dat ik mijn thesis nog moet verdedigen, was dit een klein feestje voor de afsluiting van een moeilijk hoofdstuk van mijn leven. Met dit boek kon ik mijn naai skills naar een hoger niveau tillen en tegelijkertijd een beetje ontspannen in de maanden waarin ik ook op zoek moest gaan naar een nieuwe baan. Ik kan dus wel zeggen dat dit boek een welkome afleiding was;) Ik werd verliefd op de ontwerpen van La Maison Victor en het boek is werkelijk prachtig. Basis technieken worden duidelijk uitgelegd en de instructies zijn heel gedetailleerd. Het bevat maar liefst 15 patronen voor allerlei soorten jurken (van casual tot klassiek) en de prijs/kwaliteit verhouding is daarom erg goed. Mijn vriendin gaf me ook een prachtige petrol-kleurige stof en alle dingen die ik nodig heb om de jurk van de cover te maken. Dit is echter niet de makkelijkste jurk, dus ik besloot om eerst met iets makkelijkers te beginnen.

Ik koos voor een kimono jurk, omdat ik oversized kleding erg graag draag. Comfortabel en klassiek kunnen heel goed samenkomen in mijn ogen. Afhankelijk van de stof die je kiest, kan deze jurk een hele andere look krijgen. Ik koos voor een viscose stof met bloemen (deze had ik toevallig nog liggen) en ik denk dat het dus heel goed door kan gaan als voorjaar/zomer jurk. Toch heb ik hem stiekem al een keer in de winter aan gehad met leggings en een vest, omdat ik te ongeduldig was haha. Zoals je in de foto kunt zien heeft de jurk een vrij diepe v-hals. Daarom besloot ik de onzichtbare drukknoopjes 20 cm lager te plaatsen dan aangegeven in het boek. Hierdoor werd de hals wat minder diep en paste het beter bij mijn lichaam. De riem is erg lang, dus je kunt een strik aan de voor- of achterkant maken, erg leuk om te varieren dus! Dit is zeker niet de makkelijkste jurk die ik ooit heb genaaid, maar het gaf net dat beetje extra uitdaging, waardoor het al met al beschouwd kan worden als een beginner+ jurk. Alle moeilijke dingen worden in detail uitgelegd, dus het is niet nodig om nog uren filmpjes op internet te kijken, een dikke plus dus. Ik kan niet wachten om nog meer jurken uit dit boek te naaien!

Handmade placemats – Free sewing pattern

Last Christmas, I gave my parents-in-law this handmade gift. Placemats made with cotton fabric and interfacing. It’s super practical, nice and very quick to sew, so perfect to give away as a present! It was extra special because I re-used the white fabric that we used on our wedding day (check out this post to see the white fabric with its initial purpose;)). I’m planning to slowly re-use all the decoration of our wedding and turn it into new handmade things. This is the first item on the list!

How to make fabric placemats

Materials

• Cotton fabric with print (4 rectangles of 47 x 36 cm)
• Cotton fabric mono-color (4 rectangles of 47 x 36 cm)
• Iron-on one-sided interfacing (I used this one, which is quite thick to give it more body)
• Sewing machine and appliances
• Iron
• Scissors

Sewing instruction

1. Iron the interfacing onto the back of the fabric with print and make sure you don’t have bubbles.
2. Place the cotton fabric for the back and the cotton fabric for the front with right sides together. Pin and mark a gap of about 10 cm on one side.
3. Sew all around, leaving the gap open.
4. Trim the edges to 1/2 cm and cut the corners with scissors.
5. Flip inside out through the gap and press. Press the fabric inside at the opening.
6. Sew again all around (now right side out), very close to the edge. In this way, you will also close the gap.
7. Make as many as you want, roll them up and attach a ribbon to it!

Afgelopen kerst heb ik mijn schoonouders dit handgemaakte cadeau gegeven. Placemats gemaakt van katoen en vlieseline. Het is een super praktisch, mooi en heel snel te naaien, perfect dus om cadeau te doen! Het was extra speciaal, omdat ik de witte stof van onze bruiloft hergebruikt heb (zie deze post om de originele functie van de witte stof te zien;)). Ik ben van plan om langzaam alle bruiloft decoraties te recyclen in handgemaakte dingen. Dit zijn de allereerste items!

Je eigen placemats naaien

Materialen

• Katoenen stof met print (4 rechthoeken van 47 x 36 cm)
• Katoenen stof met egale kleur (4 rechthoeken van 47 x 36 cm)
• Eenzijdig opstrijkbare vlieseline (ik gebruikte deze, om de placemats stevigheid te geven)
• Naaimachine en benodigdheden
• Strijkijzer
• Schaar

Naai instructie

1. Strijk de vlieseline op de achterzijde van de stof met print. Zorg ervoor dat je geen bubbels hebt.
2. Leg de katoenen stof voor de achterkant en de katoenen stof voor de voorkant met de goede kant op elkaar. Speld ze vast, maar laat een gat van 10cm aan een zijde open.
3. Naai volledig rondom, maar laat het gat open.
4. Knip de zijdes tot 0.5 cm van de naad en knip de hoekjes af.
5. Keer om door het gat en pers de placemat met het strijkijzer. Zorg ervoor dat de ruwe zijden van het gat naar binnen gevouwen zijn.
6. Naai volledig rondom (nu met de goede kant naar buiten), heel dicht tegen de rand. Nu sluit je automatisch ook het gat.
7. Maak er zoveel als je wilt, rol ze op en doe er een leuk lintje om!

‘Invisible’ zipper bags – Sewing pattern review

This week I was supposed to fly to Vienna with my cousin, but unfortunately, the new corona measures changed that plan. Since we had already taken days off, we quickly thought about an alternative place that we could visit and decided to go to Paris instead. We went there exactly 10 years ago, so we are super excited to see it again! Back then, we didn’t visit any museum (since we were there in summer), so now we will take our chance to finally visit some of the famous highlights of this beautiful city. We remembered that my mum had one of those invisible zipper pouches to keep our documents safe (and we actually made a lot of fun of her haha), but realized now how handy it actually is. Since we’re going soon already I decided to sew two myself!

I used the book ‘Tassen, leuke tassen om zelf te maken’ (Dutch book, available here). I picked a pattern that is actually for a child’s bag, but it’s perfectly fitting its purpose as an ‘invisible’ zipper bag too! I picked a stretchy fabric (the flower print) and a smooth fabric (that is actually a curtain fabric) because I think those will be the most comfortable to wear against your skin. The curtain fabric was, however, very slippery and the folds didn’t stay in after pressing with an iron. So don’t make the same mistake as me and use any other kind of fabric instead;) I didn’t have a rope that was fitting with the bags, so I decided to use soft bamboo cotton (for crochet hook 4mm) and made a braid. The braids are sewed in between the two fabric layers. It was very quick to make and the book inspired me to try some other patterns soon too!

Deze week had ik met mijn nichtje naar Wenen moeten vliegen, maar helaas brachten de nieuwe corona maatregelen daar verandering in. Aangezien we al dagen vrij hadden genomen, bedachten we snel een alternatieve locatie waar we naartoe konden gaan: Parijs! We zijn daar precies 10 jaar geleden ook samen geweest, dus we hebben enorm veel zin om het weer te zien! Tien jaar geleden hebben we geen enkel museum bezocht (we waren daar in de zomer), dus nu pakken we onze kans en hopen we eindelijk wat bekende highlights van deze prachtige stad te kunnen zien. We konden ons nog herinneren dat mijn moeder toen een onzichtbaar tasje had om onze documenten veilig op te bergen (en we hebben haar enorm uitgelachen hierom haha), maar nu realiseren we ons dat het eigenlijk best wel heel handig is. Aangezien we binnenkort al gaan, besloot ik er een paar zelf te maken!

Ik heb het boek ‘Tassen, leuke tassen om zelf te maken’ (hier beschikbaar) hiervoor gebruikt. Deze staat boordevol leuke en handige tassen en heeft een aparte kinder sectie. Hier vond ik een patroon voor een kindertasje, maar dit was dus precies wat ik zocht voor een onzichtbaar rits tasje! Ik koos voor een stretch stofje (met bloemetjes) en een glad stofje (wat eigenlijk gordijn stof is), omdat ik denk dat deze het meest comfortabel zijn om te dragen tegen je huid. De gordijnstof was echter veel te glad om te naaien met mijn machine en de vouwen bleven zelfs na het persen met een strijkijzer niet goed zitten. Maak dus niet dezelfde fout als ik en kies een ander stofje;) Ik had geen bandjes liggen die bij de tassen pasten, dus ik besloot om zacht bamboo katoen (voor haaknaald 4mm) te gebruiken om bandjes mee te maken. Ik heb deze met een traditionele vlecht breder gemaakt. De vlechtjes konden gemakkelijk tussen de twee lagen stof worden genaaid. Het was super makkelijk om te maken en dit boek heeft me gelijk weer nieuwe inspiratie gegeven voor wat nieuwe projecten!

Crinkle baby blanket with labels- Sewing instruction

Do you also notice the ongoing baby boom? It’s an amazing time for the new parents, but also for those who love to make handmade baby toys and clothing. Probably you have never been so busy! I can definitely count myself as someone who loves to make things for babies, even though I don’t have one myself. You just know that they will always be happy with whatever you’re giving them (maybe it’s another story for the parents, but we ignore that for now;)). Since I can barely keep up with making all handmade gifts for birthdays/Christmas/other festivities etc., I decided it was time to create a baby gift that is cute, practical, and quick to make. Crocheting is by default time-consuming, so it became a simple baby blanket made of fabric. It’s not just a baby blanket though, it crinkles and it has cute labels attached to it! Ideally, you make this on your sewing machine, but you can definitely hand sew this as well. Here we go!

Step-by-step instruction for a crinkle baby blanket with labels

Crinkle baby blanket with labels sewing instruction

Materials

• 100% cotton (potentially two different colours/prints)
• Fleece interfacing
• Crinkle foil (available here)
• Labels in different colours and prints
• Optional: ‘handmade label’
• Pins
• Wonderclips (available here)
• Needle and sewing thread

Instruction (see pictures above)

Step 1 Cut a square of 22x22cm (including sewing allowance) of the cotton fabric with print. Cut the labels between 5-8cm. I cut all the labels at a length of 7cm, and placed them at different heights onto the fabric (See picture 1). Pin all the labels in place with the right side facing you. Pay attention that on one side you leave open a gap of about 8 cm where you do not pin labels. Mark where this gap is (you will need this later to flip the blanket inside out).
Step 2 Cut another square of the cotton used for the back (in my case plain pink), the crinkle foil, and the fleece interfacing. Layer them as indicated on picture 2.
Step 3 Clip or pin the layers in place. I used wonder clips, so you don’t damage the crinkle foil.
Step 4
a) Sew with a sewing machine (or by hand) all around, leaving open the gap of about 8 cm that you marked in step 1.
b) Backside of your blanket. Cut all the corners. Pay attention you don’t cut through your stitches.
Step 5 Flip your blanket inside out through the gap. Now you can carefully remove all the pins from the labels.
Step 6 Press your blanket with an iron. Fold the fabric inwards where your 8cm gap is and press.
Step 7 Close the gap by hand by using a ladder stitch (see this video for an explanation)
Step 8 (Optional) Sew a ‘handmade’ label into place.
Step 9 Congratulations! Your crispy baby blanket with labels is finished!

Merk jij ook iets van de babyboom in je omgeving? Het is niet alleen een geweldige tijd voor de nieuwe ouders, maar ook voor degenen die het leuk vinden om handgemaakte baby cadeaus te maken. Waarschijnlijk heb je het nog nooit zo druk gehad! Ik ben zeker zo iemand, ondanks dat ik zelf geen baby heb. Je weet gewoon dat een baby altijd blij zal zijn met wat je hebt gemaakt (wat vast niet altijd geldt voor de ouders, maar dat terzijde;)). Sinds ik het aantal handgemaakte cadeaus die ik nog moet maken voor verjaardagen/kerst/andere festiviteiten amper bij kan houden, besloot ik dat het tijd was om een baby cadeau te maken welke schattig, praktisch, maar ook zeker snel te maken is. Haken is by default erg tijdrovend, dus het werd een simpel babydoekje gemaakt van katoenen stof. Het is niet zomaar een baby doekje, maar een die knispert en leuke labels heeft! Idealiter maak je dit doekje met de naaimachine, maar het kan ook prima met de hand. Hier gaan we dan!

Materialen

• 100% katoenen stof (optioneel: twee verschillende prints)
• Fleece tussenvoering
• Knisperfolie (hier beschikbaar)
• Labels in verschillende kleuren en printjes
• Optioneel: ‘handgemaakt label’
• Spelden
• Optioneel: wonderclips (hier beschikbaar)
• Naald en naaigaren

Instructie (zie de fotocollage hierboven)

Stap 1 Knip een vierkant van 22x22cm (bevat al de naadtoeslag) van de katoenen stof met print. Knip labels met een lengte van 5-8cm. Ik heb alle labels op lengte 7cm geknipt en ze op verschillende hoogtes geplaats (zie foto 1). Dit kun je daarna bijknippen. Speld de labels vast op de stof met de goede kant naar boven (zie foto 1). Zorg ervoor dat je aan 1 zijde een ruimte van 8cm vrij houdt van labels. Markeer dit.
Stap 2 Knip nog een vierkant uit je tweede katoenen stof (achterkant), van de knisperfolie en van de fleece tussenvoering. Leg ze over elkaar zoals aangegeven op foto 2.
Stap 3 Klip of pin alle laagjes op elkaar. Ik heb hier wonderclips gebruikt, omdat je dan geen gaatjes maakt in de knisperfolie, waardoor je niet riskeert dat het scheurt.
Step 4
a) Naai met de naaimachine (of met de hand) volledig rondom, maar laat het gemarkeerde gat van 8 cm open.
b) Achterkant van je baby doekje. Knip alle hoekjes. Let erop dat je niet door je steken heen knipt.
Stap 5 Keer je doekje binnenstebuiten door het gat. Nu kun je voorzichtig alle spelden uit de labels halen.
Stap 6 Pers het doekje met het strijkijzer. Vouw de stof naar binnen waar het 8cm gat is en pers.
Stap 7 Naai het gat met de hand dicht met een onzichtbare steek (zie deze video voor een uitleg).
Stap 8 (Optioneel) Naai een ‘handgemaakt’ label op het doekje.
Stap 9 Gefeliciteerd! Je knisper babydoekje met labels is nu af!

Aaaaand we’re back! After a two weeks break we managed to recover a bit and to make some nice new projects for you. Today I want to take you on my sewing journey.

A friend of mine gave birth to her second daughter and I wanted to gift her something that I made myself. The obvious choice would be to crochet something for her (since I’m most comfortable with this), but in this way you never improve other skills, right? So I gathered my courage and started two baby projects: a baby bodysuit/romper and a cute little hat with a knot.

Let’s start with the hat: this was so much fun to make! I used a free sewing pattern that you can find here. It was very easy and you can increase the sizes yourself to make the hat bigger. I used a stretch (tricot) fabric with a giraffe print, so I had to pay a bit of attention that the giraffes were in the right direction. Besides that, everything else was super simple and the knot really gives a playful effect. Definitely recommended to make a few yourself to practice your sewing skills with stretchy materials;)

Then the bodysuit/romper. This went a bit less smooth and made me a bit insecure. I did finish it though, and I think I should remake one just to get it right. I used a free pattern from the Small Dreamfactory, which you can find here. Cutting the pieces was a piece of cake, but placing the biaisband was a whole different story. I did not want to use the same giraffe fabric for the lining, since the direction of the giraffes would not be right anymore. Instead, I went for a white tricot fabric to make more contrast. I did not have it in my stash yet and had to order some. The thing I didn’t realize was that if the description says ‘combed cotton’ it means you have a nice fluffy side, which is perfect for whole clothing pieces or blankets, but not so much to use as biaisband. As you can see in the picture, the borders became fairly thick and I had some troubles in sewing it neatly. Lesson learned! Use thin fabric for you lining;) The last piece of the bodysuit was the placing of three buttons. I thought it would be nice to use a special tool for this, which clips the buttons with small teeth in the fabric. But (as you might expect at this point), the lining was too thick for the clips to go through. I ended up using buttons that had to be sewn onto the fabric and they were just not the color I wished to have. I decided to give the bodysuit anyway, but to hide the imperfections I did crochet a small baby toy too. You will see this next week!

En we zijn er weer! Na een pauze van twee weken zijn we weer een beetje opgeladen om wat nieuwe projecten voor jullie te maken. Vandaag wil ik jullie meenemen op mijn naai avontuur.

Een vriendin van mij heeft een tweede dochter gekregen en ik wilde haar iets zelfgemaakts geven. De voor de hand liggende keuze was om iets te maken (omdat ik hier het meest comfortabel mee ben), maar hierdoor kun je nooit je andere skills oefenen, toch? Daarom verzamelde ik mijn moed en startte ik twee baby projecten: een baby romper en een schattig baby mutsje met knoop.

Laten we beginnen met het mutsje: dit was zo leuk om te maken! Ik heb een gratis naaipatroon gebruikt, welke je hier kunt vinden. Het was erg goed te volgen en je kunt de maat naar wens aanpassen. Ik heb stretch (tricot) stof gebruikt met een giraffen print, dus ik moest wel even opletten dat ik de stof in de juiste richting knipte. Verder was het een super simpel project en het knoopje geeft een leuk speels effect. Ik kan dit patroon dus zeker aanraden om je naai skills met stretch stoffen te oefenen!

Dan de baby romper. Dit verliep iets minder soepel en maakte me een beetje onzeker. Ik heb het wel afgemaakt en ik denk dat ik er nog een zou moeten maken om er echt tevreden mee te zijn. Hoe dan ook heb ik er veel van geleerd! Ik heb het gratis patroon van Small Dreamfactory gebruikt, welke je hier kunt vinden. Het knippen van de onderdelen was niet zo moeilijk, maar het plaatsen van het biaisband was een ander verhaal. Ik wilde niet het giraffenstofje gebruiken voor de biais, omdat de richting van de giraffen dan niet meer zou kloppen. Daarom koos ik voor een contrast kleur met wit tricot stof. Deze moest ik wel eerst kopen en ik had mij niet gerealiseerd dat deze aan 1 kant gekamd was, waardoor de stof dikker en fluffier was. Dit is super als je kleding of dekentjes wilt maken, maar minder geschikt voor biaisband. Zoals je op de foto kunt zien, zijn de randen best wel dik geworden en daardoor kon ik het niet helemaal netjes naaien. Ik heb dus mijn les geleerd en zal volgende keer ongekamde stof gebruiken als biaisband;) Het laatste wat ik moest doen was het plaatsen van 3 drukknoopjes. Ik had het idee om hiervoor een tool te gebruiken die drukknoopjes met een soort tandjes eraan in de stof plaatsen, maar je raadt het al, de rand was natuurlijk veel te dik hiervoor. Ik heb uiteindelijk dus drukknoopjes aangenaaid, maar deze waren net niet de kleur die ik voor ogen had. Jammer, maar ik moest het ermee doen. Ik heb het rompertje samen met het mutsje wel cadeau gedaan, maar om de imperfecties een beetje te verbloemen heb ik er toch nog maar een baby knuffeltje bij gehaakt:) Deze deel ik volgende week met jullie!

T-shirt girls dress with long sleeves (my actual first version) – Sewing pattern review

Remember the girls dress I showed you two weeks ago? I promised I would show you how my actual first version of the dress looked like, so here it is! I used the same pattern as I listed earlier, the Bell Sleeve T-shirt Dress Pattern from Jamie that is available for free on her blog Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom. You will probably immediately notice that mine does look a bit different. I was planning on making straight sleeves instead of bell sleeves, so that part turned out well, but the skirt was a whole different story! As I mentioned in my previous post, I accidentally read the sizing of the skirt wrong in the table that is added to the pattern. Instead of folding the fabric first and cutting on fold, I just straight up cut the rectangle directly. This resulted in a skirt that was half the width than what it was supposed to be, so obviously I couldn’t make the nice folds in it anymore… help!

Of course I didn’t want to throw out the project immediately, so I thought of an alternative way to turn this dress into something cute anyway. I cut a strap of white tricot fabric that was actually twice the width of the skirt and 4cm high. I sewed two straight lines alongside the strap, with very large stitches. I pulled one thread on both sides, so I could wrinkle it till I reached the width of my skirt. Check out this video to see how you do it. I aligned the white wrinkled strap between the bodice and the skirt (right sides together) and sewed along with a zig zag stretch stitch. I followed the normal instruction for the rest of the dress. In the end, I thought it wasn’t so bad after all and making these kind of mistakes actually teaches you to come up with creative solutions! My friend’s daughter was definitely happy with this one too, but I think she secretly preferred her blue bunny dress (I cannot blame her;)). Herinneren jullie nog de T-shirt meisjes jurk welke ik twee weken geleden aan jullie had laten zien (lees het hier terug)? Ik had jullie beloofd dat ik ook mijn eerste versie van deze jurk zou laten zien (want stiekem was de blauwe konijnenjurk de 2e versie), dus hier is ie dan! Ik heb hetzelfde naaipatroon gebruikt als de vorige keer, de Bell Sleeve T-shirt Dress Pattern van Jamie welke gratis beschikbaar is op haar blog  Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom. Je ziet waarschijnlijk gelijk al dat mijn versie van de jurk er wel een beetje anders uit ziet. Ik was al van plan om rechte mouwen te maken in plaats van bel mouwen, maar de rok had ik zeker niet zo gepland! Zoals ik al in mijn vorige post uit had gelegd, had ik de bijgevoegde tabel met de maten voor de rok verkeerd gelezen. In plaats van op de vouw te knippen had ik direct een rechthoek uitgeknipt, waardoor de rok nog maar half de breedte was dan wat hij zou moeten zijn. Ik kon nu dus niet meer die leuke plooitjes maken…help!

Natuurlijk wilde ik het project niet gelijk weggooien, dus ik bedacht een alternatieve manier om deze jurk toch nog in iets leuks te kunnen veranderen. Ik knipte een stuk witte tricot stof uit, welke 2x de breedte van de rok was met een hoogte van 4 cm. Ik naaide met grote steken twee rechte lijnen op de strook en trok aan weerszijden aan een enkel draadje om plooien te maken. Bekijk deze video voor een uitleg. Ik plaatste de strook tussen het topje en de rok (goede zijden tegen elkaar aan) en naaide de strook met een zig zag stretch steek vast. Daarna volgde ik het normale patroon om het jurkje af te maken. Uiteindelijk was het resultaat helemaal niet zo slecht en heb ik juist geleerd om een creatieve oplossing te vinden als iets niet gaat zoals je gepland had. Het dochtertje van mijn vriendin was zeker ook blij met dit jurkje, maar ik denk dat ze stiekem de blauwe met de konijntjes leuker vond (ik neem het haar niet kwalijk;)). Not so long ago I went to a fabric market in Utrecht, The Netherlands with a friend of mine and we bought some very cute tricot fabrics for her 6-years old daughter. She really likes dresses, so we decided it would be perfect to make some different types of dresses for her. It is becoming a bit colder here, as autumn will soon make his entrance again. It does not mean that we will immediately grab our thick winter clothing again, but long sleeves will be comfy for sure. Therefore, I picked the Bell Sleeve T-shirt Dress Pattern from Jamie that is available for free on her blog Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom to make the first dress.

As you can see on the pictures, I changed the sleeves of the pattern. Instead of bell sleeves I made straight ones. I just added the necessary length to the basis of the sleeves. It is an easy to follow pattern and I really appreciate the fact that this is a ‘paper saving’ pattern, which means that you don’t need to print a lot of pages to be able to make this dress. The skirt is just a rectangle, so you can just measure and cut this out from the fabric directly. Pay attention that you measure the size of the skirt correctly (see table on the website where you find the pattern) as you need twice the width as is written in the table. There was a comment above it, but I missed this when I was making the first version of this dress, which I then turned in an alternative version (I will post this soon!). Here you actually see my second try, which is how it is supposed to be. To sew this dress, I used a zigzag stretch stitch on my sewing machine, since I unfortunately don’t own an overlocker yet. It is on my wish list for when I move to a bigger house;). The daughter of my friend loved the dress and it is really perfect for everyday use. More to come!

Niet zo lang geleden ben ik met een vriendin naar de stoffenmarkt in Utrecht gegaan en we hebben hele leuke tricot stofjes voor haar 6-jarige dochter gekocht. Ze is gek op jurkjes, dus we besloten dat we verschillende type jurkjes voor haar zouden gaan maken. Het wordt nu een beetje kouder hier, omdat herfst langzaam zijn intrede aan het maken is. Dat betekent natuurlijk niet dat we gelijk onze dikke winterkleding uit de kast moeten trekken, maar het dragen van lange mouwen is wel fijn. Daarom koos ik voor het patroon ‘Bell Sleeve T-shirt Dress’ van Jamie, welke gratis beschikbaar is op haar blog Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom voor het maken van het eerste jurkje. Let wel op, dit patroon is in het Engels.

Zoals je op de foto ziet, heb ik het patroon niet helemaal gevolgd. Ik heb de mouwen aangepast naar rechte mouwen door de basis van de mouwen te verlengen naar de gewenste lengte. Het is een makkelijk te volgen patroon en ik waardeer enorm dat het een ‘papier besparend’ patroon is, wat betekent dat je slechts een paar velletjes hoef te printen. De rok is namelijk gewoon een rechthoek, dus deze kun je zelf uitmeten en direct uit de stof knippen. Let wel op dat je 2x de breedte neemt als wat is aangegeven in de tabel bij het patroon. Dit staat er in een opmerking boven, maar ik had erover heen gelezen. De eerste versie van dit jurkje is er dus heel anders uitgekomen (maar zeker niet minder leuk) en zal ik binnenkort met jullie delen;). Hier zie je dus mijn tweede poging en dus ook hoe het jurkje uit hoorde te zien. Ik heb voor dit jurkje een zigzag stretch steek gebruikt op mijn naaimachine, omdat ik helaas nog geen overlocker heb. Dit staat op mijn wensenlijstje voor als we in een groter huis wonen:). Het dochtertje van mijn vriendin was helemaal blij met het jurkje en het is echt perfect voor alledaags gebruik. Er komen er dus zeker meer van!
