These days I’ve been so busy that I didn’t have the energy or inspiration to write a post. We are working on our attic, changing my sons room, working on our garden and I still need to get used to my new work. I just can’t find the time to relax and craft. Have you ever had similar periods?

One of my projects I still wanted to tell you about, is a project I got from my mother-in-law. She bought socks for the entire family for Sinterklaas and she bought them at Many Mornings. They produce and make their socks in Poland. They also want to reduce their waste, so you can buy a Sock Monkey DIY-kit with parts of left-over socks and make something yourself. My mother-in-law also gave us this kit. Unfortunately the kit isn’t always available. They do want to do this in the future, but for now they only sell this kit in certain seasons.

I think the idea of re-using materials like in this kit is so much fun. You can enjoy your socks and you can make a fun little project. I’m definitely not great in hand sewing but my son loved the finished project and the monkey became one of his cuddle crew. So if you want to buy fun socks, keep an eye out for this fun company!

Afgelopen dagen was ik zo druk en onrustig met van alles en nog wat, dat ik geen energie en inspiratie had voor het schrijven van een blog. We zijn thuis bezig met het opknappen van de zolder, de kamer van mijn zoontje en we zijn begonnen met het aanleggen van een ecologische achtertuin en ondertussen ben ik me nog aan het inwerken op mijn nieuwe werk. Weinig tijd om te relaxen en te handwerken dus. Hebben jullie ook weleens van dit soort periodes?

Ondanks de drukte heb ik wel nog een leuk projectje om met jullie te delen. Het is een cadeautje wat ik kreeg van mijn schoonmoeder met Sinterklaas. Zij kocht namelijk sokken voor de hele familie bij Many Mornings. Het is een bedrijf wat sokken produceert en maakt in Polen. Ook zijn ze bezig met het verzinnen wat ze het beste met hun afval kunnen doen, zodat ze zo min mogelijk hoeven weg te gooien. Een van die ideeën is het verkopen van de Sock Monkey DIY-kit. Met deze kit kan je zelf een aap naaien van restjes sokken. Mijn schoonmoeder had voor ons dus ook zo’n kit besteld. Super grappig! Helaas is de kit niet alijd beschikbaar zag ik. Dit is wel een van de pijlers voor de toekomst, maar tot nu toe verkopen ze het alleen in een bepaald seizoen.

Ik vind het concept wel echt ontzettend leuk! De motiefjes zijn ook zo vrolijk. Je hebt in ieder geval plezier van de sokken en je kan nog wat leuks maken van restjes. Ik ben helaas niet zo’n ster in dingen met de hand naaien, maar mijn zoontje vond het eindresultaat fantastisch en kon niet wachten tot de aap helemaal af was. Maar, wil je dus een leuk en origineel DIY cadeautje aan iemand geven, dan is dit bedrijf misschien wel leuk om in de gaten te houden!

Cactus pincushion – Felt pattern instruction

A friend of mine loves to sew and I wanted to give her a small gift that she could use for her hobby. Since she likes plants and cactuses too, I made her a cactus pincushion from felt. It’s super easy, and to help you start, I wrote down the instruction below.

Felt cactus pincushion

Materials

• 100% wool felt thickness 1-1.2mm
• Glass or something elkse to draw a circle
• Baking paper or sewing paper
• Small plastic balls to make the base heavier (available here)
• Synthetic filling (available here)
• Sewing machine + appliances
• Scissors
• Needle + dread

1. Use the glass to cut out a circle of the baking paper/sewing paper in whatever size you like, but how bigger you cut it, how easier it will be to sew later on. Cut the circle in half.
2. Pin it onto the felt.
3. Cut 6 halfs, 3 of each color.
4. Match color A with B and sew the curved sides, leave the straight side open.
5. Make small cuts in the curved edges, make sure now to cut into the seams. Then, flip the halfs inside out.
6. Layer the 3 halfs on top of each other and sew by hand one vertical line from the bottom till the top through all 6 layers of felt. Now you fill up the cactus with synthetic filling, you have 6 gaps to fill in total. Close the gap on the bottom by hand, pulling the halfs all together till the filling cannot come out anymore.
7. Make a base by cutting two brown circles, sew together (leaving open a gap), flip inside out and fill with plastic balls. Close the gap by hand and sew the cactus body on top of it. Because of the weight of the plastic balls, the cactus will stand nicely. Decorate the cactus with a cute flower.

Een vriendin van mij is gek op naaien en ik wilde haar een klein cadeautje geven wat ze bij het naaien kon gebruiken. Omdat ze ook gek is op planten en cactussen, besloot ik een cactus speldenkussen voor haar te naaien van vilt. Het is heel makkelijk en om je alvast op weg te helpen kun je de instructie van hieronder gebruiken (instructie volgt de foto’s van hierboven).

Cactus speldenkussen van vilt

Materialen

• 100% wolvilt dikte 1-1.2mm
• Glas of passer om een cirkel te tekenen
• bakpapier of patroonpapier
• plastic balletjes (hier beschikbaar)
• Synthetische knuffelvulling (hier beschikbaar)
• Naaimachine + toebehoren
• Schaar
• Naald en draad

Instructie

1. Gebruik het glas om een cirkel uit het bakpapier/patroonpapier te knippen in een grootte die jij mooi vindt. Hoe groter je het knipt, hoe makkelijker het te naaien is. Knip de cirkel in half.
2. Speldt de halve maantjes op het vilt.
3. Knip 6 halve maantjes uit het vilt, 3 van elke kleur (A en B)
4. Leg 3x kleur A en B op elkaar en naai de ronde kant. Laat de rechte kant open.
5. Knip de ronde kant op meerdere plekken een beetje in (niet door je naad heen knippen). Keer daarna de halve maantjes binnenste buiten.
6. Plaats de 3 halve maantjes op elkaar en naai met de hand een verticale lijn door alle 6 lagen vilt. Vul de 6 gevormde gaten goed op met synthetische knuffelvulling en naai met de hand de onderkant dicht, trek daarbij de buitenste zijdes naar binnen, zodat de cactus een bolvorm krijgt.
7. Maak een basis door 2 cirkels van vilt te knippen, naai rondom (maar laat een klein gat open) en keer binnenste buiten. Vul met plastic balletjes en naai met de hand de cirkelvormige basis dicht. Naai nu de cactus erop en decoreer het met een klein vilten bloemetje.

‘Invisible’ zipper bags – Sewing pattern review

This week I was supposed to fly to Vienna with my cousin, but unfortunately, the new corona measures changed that plan. Since we had already taken days off, we quickly thought about an alternative place that we could visit and decided to go to Paris instead. We went there exactly 10 years ago, so we are super excited to see it again! Back then, we didn’t visit any museum (since we were there in summer), so now we will take our chance to finally visit some of the famous highlights of this beautiful city. We remembered that my mum had one of those invisible zipper pouches to keep our documents safe (and we actually made a lot of fun of her haha), but realized now how handy it actually is. Since we’re going soon already I decided to sew two myself!

I used the book ‘Tassen, leuke tassen om zelf te maken’ (Dutch book, available here). I picked a pattern that is actually for a child’s bag, but it’s perfectly fitting its purpose as an ‘invisible’ zipper bag too! I picked a stretchy fabric (the flower print) and a smooth fabric (that is actually a curtain fabric) because I think those will be the most comfortable to wear against your skin. The curtain fabric was, however, very slippery and the folds didn’t stay in after pressing with an iron. So don’t make the same mistake as me and use any other kind of fabric instead;) I didn’t have a rope that was fitting with the bags, so I decided to use soft bamboo cotton (for crochet hook 4mm) and made a braid. The braids are sewed in between the two fabric layers. It was very quick to make and the book inspired me to try some other patterns soon too!

Deze week had ik met mijn nichtje naar Wenen moeten vliegen, maar helaas brachten de nieuwe corona maatregelen daar verandering in. Aangezien we al dagen vrij hadden genomen, bedachten we snel een alternatieve locatie waar we naartoe konden gaan: Parijs! We zijn daar precies 10 jaar geleden ook samen geweest, dus we hebben enorm veel zin om het weer te zien! Tien jaar geleden hebben we geen enkel museum bezocht (we waren daar in de zomer), dus nu pakken we onze kans en hopen we eindelijk wat bekende highlights van deze prachtige stad te kunnen zien. We konden ons nog herinneren dat mijn moeder toen een onzichtbaar tasje had om onze documenten veilig op te bergen (en we hebben haar enorm uitgelachen hierom haha), maar nu realiseren we ons dat het eigenlijk best wel heel handig is. Aangezien we binnenkort al gaan, besloot ik er een paar zelf te maken!

Ik heb het boek ‘Tassen, leuke tassen om zelf te maken’ (hier beschikbaar) hiervoor gebruikt. Deze staat boordevol leuke en handige tassen en heeft een aparte kinder sectie. Hier vond ik een patroon voor een kindertasje, maar dit was dus precies wat ik zocht voor een onzichtbaar rits tasje! Ik koos voor een stretch stofje (met bloemetjes) en een glad stofje (wat eigenlijk gordijn stof is), omdat ik denk dat deze het meest comfortabel zijn om te dragen tegen je huid. De gordijnstof was echter veel te glad om te naaien met mijn machine en de vouwen bleven zelfs na het persen met een strijkijzer niet goed zitten. Maak dus niet dezelfde fout als ik en kies een ander stofje;) Ik had geen bandjes liggen die bij de tassen pasten, dus ik besloot om zacht bamboo katoen (voor haaknaald 4mm) te gebruiken om bandjes mee te maken. Ik heb deze met een traditionele vlecht breder gemaakt. De vlechtjes konden gemakkelijk tussen de twee lagen stof worden genaaid. Het was super makkelijk om te maken en dit boek heeft me gelijk weer nieuwe inspiratie gegeven voor wat nieuwe projecten!

Crinkle baby blanket with labels- Sewing instruction

Do you also notice the ongoing baby boom? It’s an amazing time for the new parents, but also for those who love to make handmade baby toys and clothing. Probably you have never been so busy! I can definitely count myself as someone who loves to make things for babies, even though I don’t have one myself. You just know that they will always be happy with whatever you’re giving them (maybe it’s another story for the parents, but we ignore that for now;)). Since I can barely keep up with making all handmade gifts for birthdays/Christmas/other festivities etc., I decided it was time to create a baby gift that is cute, practical, and quick to make. Crocheting is by default time-consuming, so it became a simple baby blanket made of fabric. It’s not just a baby blanket though, it crinkles and it has cute labels attached to it! Ideally, you make this on your sewing machine, but you can definitely hand sew this as well. Here we go!

Step-by-step instruction for a crinkle baby blanket with labels

Crinkle baby blanket with labels sewing instruction

Materials

• 100% cotton (potentially two different colours/prints)
• Fleece interfacing
• Crinkle foil (available here)
• Labels in different colours and prints
• Optional: ‘handmade label’
• Pins
• Wonderclips (available here)
• Needle and sewing thread

Instruction (see pictures above)

Step 1 Cut a square of 22x22cm (including sewing allowance) of the cotton fabric with print. Cut the labels between 5-8cm. I cut all the labels at a length of 7cm, and placed them at different heights onto the fabric (See picture 1). Pin all the labels in place with the right side facing you. Pay attention that on one side you leave open a gap of about 8 cm where you do not pin labels. Mark where this gap is (you will need this later to flip the blanket inside out).
Step 2 Cut another square of the cotton used for the back (in my case plain pink), the crinkle foil, and the fleece interfacing. Layer them as indicated on picture 2.
Step 3 Clip or pin the layers in place. I used wonder clips, so you don’t damage the crinkle foil.
Step 4
a) Sew with a sewing machine (or by hand) all around, leaving open the gap of about 8 cm that you marked in step 1.
b) Backside of your blanket. Cut all the corners. Pay attention you don’t cut through your stitches.
Step 5 Flip your blanket inside out through the gap. Now you can carefully remove all the pins from the labels.
Step 6 Press your blanket with an iron. Fold the fabric inwards where your 8cm gap is and press.
Step 7 Close the gap by hand by using a ladder stitch (see this video for an explanation)
Step 8 (Optional) Sew a ‘handmade’ label into place.
Step 9 Congratulations! Your crispy baby blanket with labels is finished!

Merk jij ook iets van de babyboom in je omgeving? Het is niet alleen een geweldige tijd voor de nieuwe ouders, maar ook voor degenen die het leuk vinden om handgemaakte baby cadeaus te maken. Waarschijnlijk heb je het nog nooit zo druk gehad! Ik ben zeker zo iemand, ondanks dat ik zelf geen baby heb. Je weet gewoon dat een baby altijd blij zal zijn met wat je hebt gemaakt (wat vast niet altijd geldt voor de ouders, maar dat terzijde;)). Sinds ik het aantal handgemaakte cadeaus die ik nog moet maken voor verjaardagen/kerst/andere festiviteiten amper bij kan houden, besloot ik dat het tijd was om een baby cadeau te maken welke schattig, praktisch, maar ook zeker snel te maken is. Haken is by default erg tijdrovend, dus het werd een simpel babydoekje gemaakt van katoenen stof. Het is niet zomaar een baby doekje, maar een die knispert en leuke labels heeft! Idealiter maak je dit doekje met de naaimachine, maar het kan ook prima met de hand. Hier gaan we dan!

Knisper babydoekje met labels – naaipatroon

Materialen

• 100% katoenen stof (optioneel: twee verschillende prints)
• Fleece tussenvoering
• Knisperfolie (hier beschikbaar)
• Labels in verschillende kleuren en printjes
• Optioneel: ‘handgemaakt label’
• Spelden
• Optioneel: wonderclips (hier beschikbaar)
• Naald en naaigaren

Instructie (zie de fotocollage hierboven)

Stap 1 Knip een vierkant van 22x22cm (bevat al de naadtoeslag) van de katoenen stof met print. Knip labels met een lengte van 5-8cm. Ik heb alle labels op lengte 7cm geknipt en ze op verschillende hoogtes geplaats (zie foto 1). Dit kun je daarna bijknippen. Speld de labels vast op de stof met de goede kant naar boven (zie foto 1). Zorg ervoor dat je aan 1 zijde een ruimte van 8cm vrij houdt van labels. Markeer dit.
Stap 2 Knip nog een vierkant uit je tweede katoenen stof (achterkant), van de knisperfolie en van de fleece tussenvoering. Leg ze over elkaar zoals aangegeven op foto 2.
Stap 3 Klip of pin alle laagjes op elkaar. Ik heb hier wonderclips gebruikt, omdat je dan geen gaatjes maakt in de knisperfolie, waardoor je niet riskeert dat het scheurt.
Step 4
a) Naai met de naaimachine (of met de hand) volledig rondom, maar laat het gemarkeerde gat van 8 cm open.
b) Achterkant van je baby doekje. Knip alle hoekjes. Let erop dat je niet door je steken heen knipt.
Stap 5 Keer je doekje binnenstebuiten door het gat. Nu kun je voorzichtig alle spelden uit de labels halen.
Stap 6 Pers het doekje met het strijkijzer. Vouw de stof naar binnen waar het 8cm gat is en pers.
Stap 7 Naai het gat met de hand dicht met een onzichtbare steek (zie deze video voor een uitleg).
Stap 8 (Optioneel) Naai een ‘handgemaakt’ label op het doekje.
Stap 9 Gefeliciteerd! Je knisper babydoekje met labels is nu af!

T-shirt girls dress with long sleeves – Sewing pattern review

Not so long ago I went to a fabric market in Utrecht, The Netherlands with a friend of mine and we bought some very cute tricot fabrics for her 6-years old daughter. She really likes dresses, so we decided it would be perfect to make some different types of dresses for her. It is becoming a bit colder here, as autumn will soon make his entrance again. It does not mean that we will immediately grab our thick winter clothing again, but long sleeves will be comfy for sure. Therefore, I picked the Bell Sleeve T-shirt Dress Pattern from Jamie that is available for free on her blog Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom to make the first dress.

As you can see on the pictures, I changed the sleeves of the pattern. Instead of bell sleeves I made straight ones. I just added the necessary length to the basis of the sleeves. It is an easy to follow pattern and I really appreciate the fact that this is a ‘paper saving’ pattern, which means that you don’t need to print a lot of pages to be able to make this dress. The skirt is just a rectangle, so you can just measure and cut this out from the fabric directly. Pay attention that you measure the size of the skirt correctly (see table on the website where you find the pattern) as you need twice the width as is written in the table. There was a comment above it, but I missed this when I was making the first version of this dress, which I then turned in an alternative version (I will post this soon!). Here you actually see my second try, which is how it is supposed to be. To sew this dress, I used a zigzag stretch stitch on my sewing machine, since I unfortunately don’t own an overlocker yet. It is on my wish list for when I move to a bigger house;). The daughter of my friend loved the dress and it is really perfect for everyday use. More to come!

Niet zo lang geleden ben ik met een vriendin naar de stoffenmarkt in Utrecht gegaan en we hebben hele leuke tricot stofjes voor haar 6-jarige dochter gekocht. Ze is gek op jurkjes, dus we besloten dat we verschillende type jurkjes voor haar zouden gaan maken. Het wordt nu een beetje kouder hier, omdat herfst langzaam zijn intrede aan het maken is. Dat betekent natuurlijk niet dat we gelijk onze dikke winterkleding uit de kast moeten trekken, maar het dragen van lange mouwen is wel fijn. Daarom koos ik voor het patroon ‘Bell Sleeve T-shirt Dress’ van Jamie, welke gratis beschikbaar is op haar blog Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom voor het maken van het eerste jurkje. Let wel op, dit patroon is in het Engels.

Zoals je op de foto ziet, heb ik het patroon niet helemaal gevolgd. Ik heb de mouwen aangepast naar rechte mouwen door de basis van de mouwen te verlengen naar de gewenste lengte. Het is een makkelijk te volgen patroon en ik waardeer enorm dat het een ‘papier besparend’ patroon is, wat betekent dat je slechts een paar velletjes hoef te printen. De rok is namelijk gewoon een rechthoek, dus deze kun je zelf uitmeten en direct uit de stof knippen. Let wel op dat je 2x de breedte neemt als wat is aangegeven in de tabel bij het patroon. Dit staat er in een opmerking boven, maar ik had erover heen gelezen. De eerste versie van dit jurkje is er dus heel anders uitgekomen (maar zeker niet minder leuk) en zal ik binnenkort met jullie delen;). Hier zie je dus mijn tweede poging en dus ook hoe het jurkje uit hoorde te zien. Ik heb voor dit jurkje een zigzag stretch steek gebruikt op mijn naaimachine, omdat ik helaas nog geen overlocker heb. Dit staat op mijn wensenlijstje voor als we in een groter huis wonen:). Het dochtertje van mijn vriendin was helemaal blij met het jurkje en het is echt perfect voor alledaags gebruik. Er komen er dus zeker meer van!

Curved linen hem top – Sewing pattern review

We are enjoying the sunshine in the Netherlands, so I could finally take out some summer clothing from my closet. Since I get (too) warm quite easily, I really like wearing tops made of light material such as linen. They are, however, not that easy to find. Especially not in happy bright colors. I went through my stock of fabrics and found this awesome leaf pattern linen that I bought about 10 years ago on a market in the Hague, the Netherlands. The reason I have this fabric for so long is not because I don’t like it, but actually for the opposite reason: it was too precious to touch. This is something I really need to work on and having our moving planned in about half a year helps me in finally using those nice materials and reducing my stock a bit;)

This fabric turned into a light curved hem top that I made using a sewing pattern from Ellie and Mac, which is available for free via this link. It was the first time I bought a sewing pattern from them and it was definitely a good first experience. The only downside is the fact that you need to print and assemble the pattern yourself. It’s not difficult, but not everyone has a printer at home of course;) I made the top without the pocket, because I liked it more like this. In the pattern you will read that they recommend using 4-stretch fabric, but I actually used linen instead. It turned out exactly how I wanted it to be, so you can easily use alternative (non-stretch) fabrics for this pattern too (without changing the sizing). I really like the nice shape at the back as well, it doesn’t look like a large bag at all. I made the neckline and armpit lining with the same linen fabric, which was not ideal since it’s not stretchy, but I did not have a good alternative at hand. Next time I would probably do that differently;)

It’s a very long top, which is perfect if you’re a bit tall. It fits well on tight jeans, but also tucked into a high waist skirt, as you can see on the photo above. I’m curious to try to make another one with stretch fabric too, I bet it will be very comfy!

We genieten volop van de zon in Nederland, dus ik kon eindelijk mijn zomerkleding weer uit de kast halen. Ik heb het heel snel (te) warm, dus ik vind het fijn om tops te dragen die gemaakt zijn van licht materiaal, zoals linnen. Ze zijn alleen niet zo makkelijk te vinden, zeker niet in leuke vrolijke kleurtjes. Ik ben door mijn voorraad stof gegaan en koos dit toffe linnen stofje uit met een blaadjespatroon. Ik kocht deze ongeveer 10 jaar geleden op een markt in den Haag. De reden dat ik dit nog steeds had liggen is niet omdat ik het niet leuk vindt, maar eigenlijk om de tegenovergestelde reden: het was te leuk om te gebruiken. Dit is echt iets waar ik aan moet werken en het feit dat we over een half jaar gaan verhuizen helpt enorm om die leuke stoffen eindelijk te gebruiken en mijn voorraad wat te reduceren;)

Dit stofje heb ik omgetoverd tot een topje met behulp van een patroon van Ellie and Mac, welke je op de webstie van Ellie and Mac gratis kunt downloaden. Het was de eerste keer dat ik een patroon daar kocht en het was zeker een goede eerste ervaring. Het enige nadeel is dat je het patroon zelf moet printen en in elkaar moet zetten. Het is niet moeilijk, maar niet iedereen heeft een printer thuis natuurlijk;) Ik heb het topje zonder borstzakje gemaakt, omdat ik het zo leuker vond. In het patroon lees je dat je een 4-richting stretch stof nodig hebt, maar ik heb linnen (niet-stretch) gebruikt. Het is precies geworden zoals ik wilde, dus je kunt ook niet-stretch stof gebruiken met dit patroon (zonder aanpassing van je maat). Zoals je op de foto ziet, is de achterzijde ook getailleerd. Ik heb de neklijn en de armsgaten gemaakt met dezelfde stof, wat misschien niet het beste idee was. Ik had echter geen bijpassende stretch stof voor handen. Dit ga ik de volgende keer dus anders doen;).

Het is een lang topje, wat perfect is als je wat langer bent. Het past goed op een strakke jeans, maar kan ook in een hoge rok gedragen worden, zoals je op de foto hierboven ziet. Ik ben nieuwsgierig om te zien hoe het topje zal zijn in stretch stof, het zal vast heel comfortabel zijn!

When this post goes online, I’m travelling to my holiday destination in Italy! I’m so excited to be able to go on holidays again that I’m actually counting down the days for a while now. I think this might be one of those moments that I need holidays the most, since I’m currently finalizing my PhD in biomedical sciences as well. It has such been a roller coaster ride with corona kicking in, writing scientific articles and applying for new jobs in the meantime, that I’m ready to pack my bags and disconnect from everything, even if it’s just for one week.

I took out my travelling bags and realized that I actually don’t have a nice compact make-up pouch that could fit in my small 10kg luggage. Of course I could have gone to the shop to buy one, but it is much nicer to make it yourself. I recently bought some new fabrics that I did not have a purpose for yet, but I simply liked the print. This more rigid fabric with bee print was one of them. I combined it with a yellow light cotton fabric to make a small zipper pouch following this amazing youtube video from Madeeveryday. I used this sewing instruction before, when I made a small whale pouch for a friend of mine. You can read back that post here. I love this instruction, because you can make this pouch in only 30 minutes! It’s really easy and the options for shapes and colors are limitedless.

I cut 4 rectangles of 23 x 18 cm (2 outer layers and 2 inner layers). I used a black 18cm zipper, which you can buy here. The width of the pouch was decided by the total length of the zipper (18cm + 5cm extra sewing length). The final size of the pouch is 21x16cm, so there is 1cm of seam allowance. Wanneer deze post online komt, ben ik onderweg naar Italie voor mijn vakantie! Ik kijk hier zo erg naar uit, dat ik al een hele tijd aan het aftellen ben. Dit is misschien wel het moment dat ik een vakantie het hardst nodig heb, omdat ik momenteel ook mijn PhD in biomedische wetenschappen aan het afronden ben. De afgelopen tijd was erg heftig met corona dat de wereld in zijn greep hield, het schrijven van wetenschappelijke artikelen en het moeten solliciteren voor een nieuwe baan. Ondanks dat ik maar een weekje weg ga, was ik meer dan ooit klaar om mijn koffers te pakken!

Ik haalde mijn koffers weer tevoorschijn en realiseerde mij dat ik eigenlijk niet echt een handig compact make-up tasje had welke in mijn 10kg koffer past. Natuurlijk kon ik er een kopen in de winkel, maar het is veel leuker om er zelf een te maken. Ik heb pas geleden nieuwe stoffen gekocht waar ik nog geen doel mee had, ik vond simpelweg de patronen leuk. Dit stevige bijen stofje was daar een van. Ik heb het gecombineerd met een gele katoenen stof om een make-up tasje met rits van te maken. Ik heb deze youtube video van Madeeveryday gevolgd. Ik heb deze instructie ook eerder gebruikt, voor het maken van een walvissen tasje, deze kun je hier teruglezen. Ik vind dit patroon geweldig, omdat je in slechts 30 minuten klaar bent! Het is echt heel makkelijk en de opties voor de kleuren en vormen zijn eindeloos.

Be Smart Jumper – Sewing pattern review

We’re back! Elseline and I took a short break to create some nice content for you again and I can already tell you that we definitely managed to do so! I want to kick-off with this skirt made with the Ellie and Mac pattern ‘ Be Smart Jumper’, which you can find on the website of Ellie and Mac via this link. I made the skirt for my friend, who is modelling the skirt in the pictures below. Doesn’t she look fabulous?! She did not want to have the straps attached to it, so it was even easier to make for me;)

It was the first time I sewed something with tricot fabric and it was easier than I expected! The waistband had to be stretched while sewing to create the folds, which I had never done before. Therefore I decided to use some scrap fabric to try different kind of ‘stretch’ stitches first. I learned that depending on the stitch you pick, you can create stronger or weaker folds. Definitely try this out first when using tricot fabric with a 4-way stretch. As you can see on the picture below, the pattern for the skirt is a perfect circle. Even my friend’s cat found it very interesting;) I choose to make the high waist version of the skirt, but when my friend put it on I realized that due to the stretch effect I could have chosen one size smaller for her. It became a low waist skirt, but it was definitely fitting her anyway. I’m very curious to see the version of this skirt with the straps, so the remake will come soon:)

We zijn terug! Elseline en ik hebben een korte pauze genomen om wat leuke content voor jullie te creeëren en ik kan nu al zeggen dat dat aardig gelukt is! Ik wil jullie als eerste dit rokje laten zien welke ik genaaid heb met het naaipatroon ‘Be Smart Jumper’ van Ellie and Mac, welke je op hun website kunt vinden via deze link (EN). Ik heb het rokje gemaakt voor mijn vriendin, wie je hierboven in de fotoreeks ziet. Ziet ze er niet fantastisch uit?! Ze wilde het rokje zonder bretels hebben, dus ze had het me nog makkelijker gemaakt ook;)

Het was de eerste keer dat ik iets met tricot stof had genaaid en het was wel makkelijker dan ik dacht! De tailleband moest wel uitgerekt worden tijdens het naaien om de plooien te vormen. Dit had ik nog nooit eerder gedaan, dus ik heb eerst verschillende steken uitgeprobeerd op restjes tricot stof om de juiste steek te kunnen kiezen. Afhankelijk van de steek krijg je grotere of kleinere plooien, dus ik raad zeker aan dit te doen wanneer je met tricot (4-richting rek) stof werkt. Zoals je in de foto hierboven ziet, is de rok een perfecte cirkel. Zelfs de kat van mijn vriendin vond de rok interessant;) Ik koos ervoor om de hoge taille rok te maken, maar toen mijn vriendin de rok paste zag ik dat het eigenlijk een lage rok was geworden. De volgende keer moet ik dus een maatje kleiner maken, wat dus prima kan met rekstof. Het staat haar gelukkig alsnog goed! Ik ben wel nieuwsgierig geworden naar de versie van de rok met bretels eraan, dus die komt er binnenkort ook nog aan:)

Bird top for all occasions – sewing pattern review

Last Christmas holidays I could finally relax enough to grab the sewing machine again and to make a clothing item for myself. My mum’s Christmas present for me was a year membership to a Dutch sewing magazine (Knipmode). I have just received the first magazine, so it was time to start with a simple project (I didn’t dare to start something complicated yet haha). The pattern is called ‘ Volant Top’ and is published in the January edition of Knipmode 2021.

I started with measuring my sizes and picked the size of the pattern accordingly. Later, however, while trying the top over my tailors dummy (best birthday gift! You can buy one here), I noticed it was a bit large on the sides and a bit short in length. Next time I will need to use one size smaller and make the top a bit longer.

I used a thin cotton fabric for the top, cotton biaisband for the neckline + armholes and two ribbons for the back. It was the first time that I used biaisband and I think I made a classic beginner mistake. I sewed two lines on the biaisband (see picture below), but now I know that it should have been just one line to release the tension a bit. In addition, I struggled a bit with the open part at the back. From the outside it looks just fine, but from the inside it’s not like how it is supposed to be. I’m still learning how to make the sharp edges perfectly folded and sewed inwards.

The top definitely has its imperfections, but I’m quite proud of it! I already wore it several times, so this indicates that I’m really happy with it:) I feel like I’m learning new things every time I grab my sewing machine. It’s trial and error, but slowly you will get there. I think I will remake this top with a different fabric and with some adjustments. Probably it will look totally different!

Afgelopen kerst kon ik eindelijk genoeg ontspannen om mijn naaimachine er weer eens bij te pakken. Ik besloot een kledingitem voor mijzelf te maken, omdat mijn moeder mij voor kerst een jaarabonnement had gegeven voor Knipmode. Ik had net mijn eerste tijdschrift ontvangen, dus het was tijd om een simpel project te maken (ik durfde het nog niet aan om gelijk met iets moeilijks te beginnen haha). Het patroon heet ‘Volant Top’ en is gepubliceerd in de januari 2021 editie van Knipmode.

Ik had eerst mijn maten opgemeten en hier het patroon bij overgetrokken. Later, bij het passen over de paspop (beste verjaardagscadeau ooit! Je kunt er hier een kopen), bleek echter dat de top wat aan de wijde kant was en eigenlijk voor het mooie een tikkeltje te kort. Volgende keer moet ik dus toch voor een maatje kleiner kiezen en de top wat langer maken.

Ik heb dun katoenen stof gebruikt, katoenen biaisband voor de halslijn + armsgaten en twee lintjes voor de achterkant. Het was de eerste keer dat ik biaisband had gebruikt en ik denk dat ik een klassieke beginnersfout heb gemaakt (zie foto hierboven). Ik heb de biaisband namelijk in 2 lijnen vastgenaaid, maar dat had er 1 moeten zijn om de spanning in de stof weg te nemen. Ook heb ik de opening aan de achterkant niet helemaal gemaakt zoals het de bedoeling was. Het ziet er van de buitenkant prima uit, maar de binnenkant is een rommeltje. Ik moet nog leren om de scherpe omrandingen goed te vouwen en te naaien.

De top heeft zeker zijn imperfecties, maar ik ben er best wel trots op! Ik heb het al een paar keer gedragen, dus dit geeft wel aan dat ik er echt blij mee ben:) Ik heb het gevoel dat ik elke keer weer nieuwe dingen leer als ik mijn naaimachine erbij pak. Het is vallen en weer opstaan, maar langzaam word je steeds beter. Ik denk dat ik deze top nog een keer ga maken met een ander stofje en wat aanpassingen. Waarschijnlijk ziet het er dan weer volledig anders uit!

Whale bag with matching pouch – Free sewing instruction

Sometimes you see fabric that you immediately fall in love with, even though you have no idea what to make with it yet. That is exactly what happened with this cute whale fabric that I found on the fabric market in Utrecht, the Netherlands. It is actually fabric for curtens (extra thick), so I had to make something solid with it. A friend will soon get her first baby, so I thought it would be perfect to make a whale-themed present for her, starting with this bag with matching pouch. I wrote down this pattern, so you can all make your own bag with your favourite fabric!

Sewing steps for the whale bag with handles

Materials

• 2 fabric rectangles of 35x40cm for outer layer
• 2 fabric rectangles of 35x40cm for inner layer
• 2 fabric stripes of 63x10cm for handles
• Sewing dread

Sewing the bag

1. Cut the rectangles and stripes.
2. Fold the fabric stripes for the handles in half at the long side and press with the iron. Repeat this procedure again, folding each half again in half. You should see 3 folding lines now. Flip the raw edges inside and press everything with the iron. The handles will now be 2.5 cm width (10/4=2.5cm).
3. Pin the handles and lock the edges of the fabric that will become the bag.
4. a) Lay the two sides of the inner bag with the good side inside and pin around. Sew all around, but leave one short side completely open (top) and leave a gap of about 15cm in the middle of the other short side (bottom) b) Pin the fabric of the outer fabric in the same way, but sew along all around, leaving only the short side on the top open.
5. Sew two lines on both sides of the handles (even though only one side of the fabric is open).
6. Flip the outer bag inside out, so the right side is facing outwards. Pin the handles 9cm from each side, leaving about 2cm over the edge of the outer bag.
7. Slide the outside bag in the inside bag (which still have the wrong side outside) and overlay the sides and the position of the handles correctly. Pin the top of the bags together and sew all around.
8. Pull out the outer bag (wrong side is outside again). Press the folds and borders for sharp edges.
9. Flip the bag inside out buy using the 15cm gap in the inner bag that you left open. Make sure that the corners are completely flipped out (you can use a stick for this).
10. a) Use an invisible handstitch to close the opening in the innerbag. See this youtube tutorial for an explanation. b) Pull the dread and finish off.

Your bag is now ready to use!

I had some whale fabric left and wanted to give the bag a nice touch, but also make something useful. Therefore, I decided to follow this youtube video by Madeeveryday (love her explanation!) and made this small zipper pouch.

Soms zie je stof liggen waar je gelijk verliefd op bent, ondanks dat je nog geen idee hebt wat je ermee gaat maken. Dat is precies wat gebeurde met dit schattige walvisprintje welke ik op de stoffenmarkt in Utrecht vond. Het is eigenlijk gordijnstof, dus ik moest er wel iets stevigs mee maken. Een vriendin krijgt binnenkort haar eerste baby, dus ik vond het een leuk idee om een walvis-thema pakketje voor haar te maken. Deze tas met matchende rits tasje zijn daar het eerste onderdeel van. Ik heb het patroon voor de tas uitgeschreven, zodat jullie allemaal je eigen tas met favoriete stof kunnen maken!

Materialen

• 2 stoffen rechthoeken van 35x40cm voor de buitenste tas
• 2 stoffen rechthoeken van 35x40cm voor de voering
• 2 stoffen stroken van 63x10cm voor de hengsels
• Naaigaren

De tas naaien

1. Knip de rechthoeken en stroken uit.
2. Vouw de stroken over de lengte in half en pers met het strijkijzer. Herhaal dit nog een keer voor elke helft (je hebt nu 3 vouwlijnen). De ruwe randen zijn nu naar binnengevouwen. Pers het nogmaals dubbel over de eerste vouwlijn, zodat de breedte van de hengsels 2.5cm zijn (10/4=2.5cm).
3. Speld de hengsels en werk de randen van de stof voor de tas af met een lock steek.
4. a) Leg de twee rechthoeken voor de voering met de goede zijde tegen elkaar aan en speld het vast. Naai rondom, maar laat 1 korte zijde volledig open (bovenkant) en laat een gat van ongeveer 15cm open in het midden van de andere korte zijde. (bodem). b) Speld de stof voor de buitenlaag ook met de goede kanten naar binnen, maar naai nu 3 zijdes dicht. Laat 1 korte zijde open (bovenkant).
5. Naai de twee randen van de hengsels (ondanks dat er slechts 1 zijde open is).
6. Keer de buitenlaag van de tas om, zodat de juiste zijde naar buiten is. Rijg de hengsels op 9cm van de zijnaad en laat ze ongeveer 2cm aan de bovenrand uitsteken.
7. Schuif the buitentas in de voering (deze heeft nog steeds de verkeerde kant buiten) en overlap de hengsels en zijnaden. Speld deze vast en naai volledig rondom.
8. Trek de buitentas naar buiten (verkeerde zijde is nu weer naar buiten gekeerd) en pers alle naden om scherpe randen te krijgen.
9. Keer de tas binnenstebuiten via het 15cm gat in de voering die je eerder hebt open gelaten. Duw de hoekjes goed uit met bijvoorbeeld een stokje.
10. a) Gebruik een onzichtbare handsteek om het 15cm gat te sluiten. In deze youtube tutorial zie je hoe dat moet. b) Trek aan het draad om het gat te sluiten en werk het weg.

Je tas is nu klaar voor gebruik!

Ik had wat stof met walvissen over en wilde de tas wat opleuken. Het moest wel iets handigs zijn, dus ik besloot om deze tutorial van Madeeveryday te volgen (haar uitleg is echt top!) voor het maken van een rits tasje die als bijv. toilettasje gebruikt kan worden.
