You have seen quite a few felt animals already that I made with the patterns of Simone Gooding of the book ‘ Felt Animals and Dolls to sew and make’. For example this cute smart snail, the fishing bear, and the traveling squirrel. I love all her designs and really can’t get enough of them. Perhaps you know already that Get Unraveled started with a frog baby blanket (check out the post with free crochet pattern here) and since then, we made several frog amigurumi. We did not, however, make a felt amigurumi frog yet. Therefore, it was time to try it out!
The patterns from Simone Gooding are not just for the amigurumi itself, they actually come with instructions on how to make all kinds of accessories, such as clothing, bags, and in this case, even a boat! The frog is a real sailor and prefers to stay in its boat all day!
I have to admit that I sometimes don’t feel like making all the accessories, because making felt animals can already be quite time-consuming when you need to attach small beads or other decorations. But seeing the total picture of the frog and the boat together just gives this little bit extra. The flagpole is made of a wooden chopstick and a wooden bead. I used fabric with interfacing to make the flag itself. The little steering wheel on the hat is a plastic hanger that I bought more than 15 years ago (!) and the vest was crocheted by going back and forth over 6 stitches with single crochets. The pattern in the book for the vest is actually knitted, but I wasn’t entirely sure how to make it, so it became a crocheted one. For this project I used 100% wool felt and especially for the boat it’s important to use felt with a bit more ‘body’. To give the boat a bit more rigidity, I used iron-on interfacing between the layers of felt. The frog and the boat are machine-sewed, but the rope is attached by hand. Although I wasn’t completely satisfied with the execution of this project, I think that overall he is quite adorable. Let’s see who I can make happy with this one!

Jullie hebben al best wat van mijn vilten dieren voorbij zien komen, welke ik gemaakt heb aan de hand van de patronen van Simone Gooding uit het boek ‘Felt Animals and Dolls to sew and make’. Zoals bijvoorbeeld dit schattige slimme slakje, de vissende beer, en de reizende eekhoorn. Ik ben gek op al haar ontwerpen en kan er echt geen genoeg van krijgen. Misschien weet je al dat Get Unraveled ooit gestart is met een kikker baby doekje (hier kun je het gratis haakpatroon terugvinden) en sindsdien hebben we verschillende kikker amigurumi’s gemaakt. We hebben echter nooit een vilten variant gemaakt. Tijd om dit uit te proberen dus!
De patronen van Simone Gooding zijn niet alleen voor de amigurumi’s, maar ook voor verscheidene accessoires, zoals kleding, tassen, en in dit geval zelfs een boot! De kikker is een echte matroos en dobbert het liefst de hele dag in zijn bootje rond!
Ik moet toegeven dat ik niet altijd zin heb om alle accessoires te maken, omdat het maken van de amigurumi zelf al best wel tijdrovend kan zijn wanneer je kleine decoraties of kraaltjes moet bevestigen. Maar als ik dan het totaalplaatje zie van de kikker met de boot, dan klopt het gewoon helemaal! De vlaggenstok is gemaakt van een dikke sateprikker met een houten kraal erop gelijmd. Het vlaggetje heb ik gemaakt van stof met opstrijkbare vlieseline ertussen. De kleine hanger van een stuur wiel heb ik maar liefst 15 jaar geleden gekocht op een markt. Het vestje heb ik gemaakt door over 6 steken vasten heen en weer te haken. Eigenlijk had ik het vestje moeten breien volgens het patroon, maar daar voelde ik me nog niet helemaal comfortabel bij. Voor dit hele project heb ik 100% wolvilt gebruikt en zeker voor de boot is het belangrijk dat je een vilt kiest wat iets dikker is en meer ‘ body’ heeft. Ik heb daarnaast ook opstrijkbare vlieseline gebruikt om de boot delen te verstevigen, voordat ik hem in elkaar zette. Alles is met de naaimachine genaaid, maar het touwtje aan de boot heb ik er met de hand aangezet. Ondanks dat ik niet helemaal tevreden was over mijn uitvoering, denk ik dat hij best schattig geworden is zo. Nu nog een goed thuis voor hem vinden!
