This is Sander the turtle (but a bit different) from the book ‘mini diertjes haken’ of Maja Hansen. The book is unfortunately not easy to find, because new releases came out. On this Dutch website you do have the possibility to buy it secondhand though. I think that this book was among the first ones in my collection (it says it got published in 2011) and since then I have made 3 projects out of it. It’s not so much and I’m honestly not entirely sure why this book doesn’t hit the couch more often (because yes, that’s the place where I create most of my things). The photography is great in this book and so are the easily understandable patterns. They are rather simple, but therefore perfect for beginners. At the same time it’s kinda the downfall of the book as well. It can become quite repetitive and therefore boring if you’re ready for the next step. The other problem I had was the purpose of the mini animals. They are too small to go as a stuffed animal for a child, but a bit too big as a keychain. I thought of one thing that I believed it was the perfect size for: a hanger for the mirror in my car! I picked Sander, because I thought it would be cool to see how he is ‘ swimming’ around while we are driving.
I’ve made some changes to increase the cuteness, for example the pupils of the eyes are positioned to the inside and the legs are positioned to the outside. You also see that I haven’t used felt for the eyes and the dots on the shield, because I wasn’t entirely sure if that would fade faster in the sunlight. The turtle is made of 100% cotton instead of acryl, because in this way the turtle stays nice for a way longer time. I always make everything with cotton for this reason. I’ve attached the neck to the shield with a small stitch, because in this way the head stays up. Finally, I’ve attached a loop to the shield to be able to hang it at the mirror of my car.

Dit is Sander de schildpad (maar dan anders) uit het boekje ‘mini diertjes haken’ van Maja Hansen. Het boek is helaas niet gemakkelijk te vinden, omdat nieuwe versies uit zijn gekomen. Je kunt het op deze Nederlandse website nog wel tweedehands kopen. Ik denk dat dit boek een van de eerste haakboeken in mijn collectie was (het was in 2011 gepubliceerd) en sindsdien heb ik er 3 projecten uit gemaakt. Dat is niet zoveel, maar eerlijk gezegd weet ik niet precies waarom dit boek niet vaker op de bank terecht is gekomen (want ja, dat is de plek waar ik de meeste projecten maak). De fotografie in het boek is erg goed en de patronen zijn ook makkelijk te volgen, dus ze zijn perfect voor beginners. Tegelijkertijd kan het een beetje saai zijn als je klaar bent voor de volgende stap. Het andere probleem wat ik ondervond is dat ik niet echt een doel voor de mini amigurumi’s had. Ze zijn namelijk te klein als een knuffel voor een kind, maar een beetje te groot als sleutelhanger. Ik kon een ding bedenken waarvan ik dacht dat het perfect was: een hanger voor aan de binnenspiegel van de auto! Ik koos Sander, omdat ik het wel cool vond dat hij zou ‘ rond zwemmen’ terwijl we rondrijden.
Ik heb wat aanpassingen gedaan om het ‘schattigheidsgehalte’ te verhogen, zo zijn de pupillen van de oogjes naar binnen gedraaid en de flippers naar buiten gepositioneerd. Ook zie je dat ik geen vilt heb gebruikt voor de ogen en de stippen, omdat ik niet zeker was hoe kleurvast dit zou zijn als het blootgesteld wordt aan veel zonlicht. Het schildpadje is gemaakt van 100% katoen en niet van acryl, want hij blijft op deze manier veel langer mooi. Ik doe dit overigens voor alle amigurumi’s die ik maak. De nek heb ik met een klein steekje vastgezet aan het schild, zodat het hoofdje goed overeind blijft staan. Als laatste heb ik een lus geknoopt aan het schild en heeft hij een mooi plekje aan de binnenspiegel van mijn auto gekregen!
Ik ben heel benieuwd om te horen wat jullie denken en wat jullie normaal gesproken met kleine amigurumi’s doen!
